There is a good chance the Padres trade OF Justin Upton, as they're gearing up to trade off a variety of players, team executives are telling ESPN.com's Jayson Stark (July 30, 7:20 pm).
However, as of early Thursday, the Mets were not involved in talks for Upton, in part because they prefer not to acquire a rental player, according to Andy Martino of the Daily News (July 30, 10:46 am).
Last week, the Mets balked at San Diego's request for at least one top prospect in a deal for Upton, while asking San Diego to pick up all of the roughly $7 million due to him between now and the end of this season, after which he can be a free agent (July 26, 2015).
The Padres have been scouting the Mets farm system since early July, according to MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone (July 10, 2015). The Mets have also reportedly shown interest in acquiring Padres OF Will Venable.
It was first reported July 21 that the Mets were interested in Upton (July 21, 11:55 am). However, later in the day, a source familiar with the team's thinking told ESPN New York's Adam Rubin that a deal would not happen (July 21, 2015).
