Now Commenting On:

The Mets plan to postpone Matt Harvey's first attempt to throw off a mound to keep him from doing too much too soon, team sources said Thursday (Daily News, June 5).

“He’s fine,” the source said. “It’s nothing physical, it’s just a plan to be more cautious.”

Harvey had been planning to throw off a mound Monday, with Jeremy Hefner doing the same on Tuesday (NY Post, June 5).

Hefner underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 28, 2013, roughly two months before Harvey’s procedure.

Hefner and Harvey have both told reporters they would like to pitch for the Mets this season.

“That’s my goal,” Hefner said last month (ESPN, May 7). “That’s my hope. Hopefully I can come and contribute if there’s a need. I think I’d be wasting my time if I wasn’t trying to get back to the big leagues.”

Harvey recently told that he wants to make five to seven starts for the Mets this season.

Sandy Alderson has yet to publicly acknowledge if this is a realistic or attainable goal for either pitcher.
