Mets infielder Wilmer Flores has been sent back to New York to have pain in his knees examined, manager Mickey Callaway said Wednesday.
The pain is "bilateral," according to Callaway, who said Flores has been dealing with the issue for a while. Callaway added that If everything checks out well, Flores could return as soon as Thursday.
The 27-year-old Flores is hitting .267/.319/.417 with 11 homers in 126 games this season while getting time at first base, second base, third base, and designated hitter.
Flores had been serving mainly as a pinch-hitter since Sept. 8, with just one hit in his last 10 at-bats.
