Will David Wright actually play for the Mets in a matter of days?
The question, which once seemed ridiculous, is now totally legitimate. The clock on Wright's rehab assignment expires in four days, and rosters expand on September 1. Wright has a scheduled off day on Monday. He is 6-for-32 in 10 games for St. Lucie, with those six hits coming in his last 18 at-bats.
On Monday morning, official word from the Mets was that the team was still in "wait-and-see mode" regarding a potential Wright return.
A level deeper, sources close to Wright said that there seemed a real chance he will join the Mets in September. Wright himself is said to be fully intent on playing, assuming his body holds up through the end of the month.
"I honestly don't know yet, but I hope he plays," said one Wright confidant.
Wright is so easy to root for, that perhaps some of this optimism is wishful thinking. The next few days will tell the story, one way or another.
