Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors predicts that the Mets will sign Curtis Granderson, Stephen Drew, Bronson Arroyo and Roy Halladay to free-agent contracts this winter.
These are decent predictions. I trust Tim's knowledge of the market. He obsesses over it more than anyone. So, while these are guesses he's making, they are very educated guesses. I mean, if not these exact four players, I think Sandy Alderson is capable of signing players of the same price range at their respective positions.
Granderson, Halladay, Drew and Arroyo would likely cost a total of around $30-40 million a year, with Drew requiring the most years at either three or four. I think this is about what the Mets can and will spend this winter, though $40 million would probably mean going over-budget. So, maybe it's Jhonny Peralta not Drew, or they trade for Michael Cuddyer instead of signing Granderson, or they sign Josh Johnson instead of Halladay. Who knows? But, you get the point. And, I agree with Tim that these type of players -- in addition to trying to trade for a power hitter -- is what we'll end up talking most about this winter.
