Now Commenting On:

Mets RHP Bartolo Colon is hysterically fascinating. This camp is full of young guys, in shape, strong and healthy. It reminds me of just how out of shape I actually am... and then there's Colon. He's older than me and he's heavier than me. The difference, aside from the $20 million contract, is he has a rubber arm, amazing command and he doesn't care what you think of his physical condition. He laughs a lot, from what I can see. He gets the joke. He's in on it, to a certain extent, joking with teammates and goofing on his conditioning.

This morning, just as the team finished stretching and starting a series of wind sprints and suicide drills, Colon quiet jogged away. He was the only one not participating. Jose Valverde yelled to him, as if to ask where he was going. Colon made a bike-riding motion with his hands. Valverde booed, laughed, then returned to the morning hustle. Colon, with a half-jog, half-walk, drifted down the tunnel back to the clubhouse...

Similarly, earlier today, the pitchers were working on their hitting, specifically the Butcher Boy bunt. It's been a while since Colon had to hit in a big-league game on a consistent basis, and it's not hard to believe watching him swing in the cage...

The Mets don't care, though, from what I hear, so long as Colon gets the last laugh. He knows the deal: Pitch like you did in Oakland, and no one here will say jack about how you do it.

Personally, I love the idea of this older, clumsy, every-guy looking dude, who steps on the mound and throws darts in, out, up, around and by hitters half his age that bench press twice their weight. It speaks to technique and craft, precision and intelligence, more than it does athletics and brute strength. This is not to say he isn't an athlete. He is, just in his own way... and that's fine, as long as he continues to win...

By the way, Jenrry Mejia and Noah Syndergaard won the Butcher Boy contest, tying with five consecutive base hits before an out...
