Tom Goodwin addressed the players today about the physical and mental approach to running the bases.
Terry Collins said the Mets would put an emphasis on taking the extra base, and Goodwin reinforced that mindset in his instruction this morning.
"Grow a pair and take a chance," said Goodwin, who the players often call "Goodie."
They worked on shortening their route between the bags. He said if a runners knows he can take the extra base, do it.
"We're going first-to-third all spring," he told them.
It's a great mentality to have, especially if the Mets are going to put up enough runs to compete. If they can avoid that station-to-station stagnation, the Mets could combat a perceived lack of thunder from the bottom half of their order.
Early last year, the Mets ground teams down with a selective, yet aggressive mentality. It's obvious they'd like to replicate it this year, but for the entire 162 game slate.
