Familia is making his first start of the year after making seven relief appearances since being recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. Familia went 9-9 with a 4.73 ERA in 28 starts for Triple-A Buffalo this season. He allowed 72 earned runs, 145 hits, 73 walks and eight home runs in 137 innings. Tonight is Familia's first career appearance against the Marlins.
Wade LeBlanc (2-5, 3.96 ERA) will start for the Marlins tonight.
LeBlanc is replacing Josh Johnson tonight, who was scratched with a tight hamstring. LeBlanc last started on September 17 when he allowed six runs in four innings against the Braves. LeBlanc has made three appearances and one start against the Mets this season - he has no record and a 3.00 ERA in six innings against New York.
As is the case with Jenrry Mejia, Familia is getting an opportunity to show what he can do in both a starting and relief role this month. Outside of one relief outing, Familia has been solid in the bullpen. In fact, his stuff has been nasty, showing a hard fastball with good downward trajectory with a hard sinker and slider. His off-speed pitches still need work, and I'm curious to see how Familia's command is at the big league level as a starting pitcher. He has shown good command as a reliever - now that will be tested as a starter.
