Now Commenting On:

Jenrry Mejia (0-1, 9.00 ERA) will start for the Mets tonight.

Mejia last pitched on September 20 against the Phillies when he allowed three hits with no walks and no strikeouts but managed to get through the inning unscathed. His first start of the season came against the Brewers nine days ago in Milwaukee, and he struggled through three innings to allow five runs, six hits, and five walks. Mejia last faced the Pirates in 2010 when he allowed an unearned run in 2 1/3 innings.

4:14 pm: Terry Collins told reporters he would like to get at least five innings from Mejia tonight.

Kyle McPherson (0-1, 2.25 ERA) will start for the Pirates tonight.

McPherson is making his second start of the season after making seven relief appearances for Pittsburgh late in the year. He allowed two runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings to the Brewers in his first start on September 19. Tonight will be McPherson's first career appearance against the Mets.

Mejia got rocked in his first start. He looked more like a thrower and less of a pitcher in that start, and he did not fool the Brewers whatsoever over three very tumultuous innings. In fact, the Brewers didn't swing and miss against any of Mejia's 68 pitches in that game. He is an exciting young talent, but is still a work in progress - he still has to develop and refine the command of his entire repertoire. Hopefully tonight he is a little more composed and can execute his pitches a little better - it will help his cause of wanting to be a member of the starting rotation.
