While Buckner had 2,715 career hits and was a former batting champion, he will forever be synonymous with the 1986 World Series when a ground ball from Mookie Wilson went through his legs in a tie game in the 10th inning to complete the Mets' comeback to force a Game 7 against the Red Sox.
Wilson went on to become close friends with Buckner, who left a positive impact on other players from that Mets' championship team as well as others throughout his life in baseball. Here are some of the reaction from former those Mets and around the league:
This is not right. My former major leaguers and teammates are slowly moving off into the sunset. I am really upset about Bill Buckner's passing. He's another guy I wished I could have played with, not just against. He was a terrific hitter as well as a human being. Tears.- keith Hernandez (@keithhernandez) May 27, 2019
As I clear my head and hold back the tears I know I will always remember Billy Buck as a great hitter and a better friend. He deserved better. Thank god for his family. I ll miss u Buck!- Bobby Valentine (@BobbyValentine) May 27, 2019

R.I.P. #BillBuckner. I know probably not my fault, but imagine how much better his life and legacy wd have been if I had homered with two outs (and no one on) in the bottom of the 9th in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series rather than flying out to left to send it to extra innings.- Lenny Dykstra (@LennyDykstra) May 27, 2019
