Logan Verrett is scheduled to start in place of Niese on Thursday in Philadelphia, with Bartolo Colon and Steven Matz pitching the first two games of the series. Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey will close out the regular season this weekend at home against the Nationals.

I'm very interested to see what they do here with Niese. Also, I wonder if the Mets intend to carry 11 or 12 pitchers on their NLDS roster? Last season, every team carried 12. Niese and Colon, plus the four starting pitchers, Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia, get them to eight arms. I assume Addison Reed and Hansel Robles will make it, as well. Yes, Sean Gilmartin is a lefty, but he's hardly lights-out against left-handed hitters. Frankly, I'd rather RH reliever Erik Goeddell pitching to lefties than Gilmartin. So, maybe it'll be Niese, even though he's never worked in the role before. Unfortunately, left-handed hitters are batting .285 against him this season, while righties are hitting .275. Of course, that's as a starter. As a reliever, focused on getting just a few batters, things could be different. I suppose that is what this week could be for...
