Jacob deGrom's agent fired a shot at the Mets during the All-Star break, basically telling them to trade him now or sign him to a long-term extension. And the whole thing was carefully orchestrated by Team deGrom, SNY's Andy Martino explained Wednesday on SNY's Shea Anything podcast.
DeGrom later said he'd love to stay with the Mets for the rest of his career, but his agent's reveal was carefully planned.
"Jacob deGrom is not somebody who likes to be in the limelight," explained Martino, who detailed how deGrom responded the next day when asked about the timing of his agent's comments, which came minutes before deGrom was set to meet the masses at All-Star media day.
When Martino noted the timing to deGrom, the pitcher smiled, giggled and said "I know."
The 30-year-old deGrom is under team control through the 2020 season, and the Mets are not expected to trade him before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.
