The least you should know:

  • Oliver Perez couldn’t get out of the fifth, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. Afterwards, Jerry Manuel admitted he’s concerned about his pitcher, saying he hasn’t seen Perez’s good stuff yet.
  • Daniel Murphy fell down again in left field in the top of the second inning, but later made a nice running grab near the foul line and a leaping catch at the wall.
  • David Wright struck out three times and made a throwing error in the middle of Ollie’s fifth-inning meltdown.
Random Thoughts:

  • Oof.
  • The Mets did not hit, pitch, run or defend well today.
  • Citi Field fans mildly booed Wright after his first two strikeouts and heartily booed him after his third. Wright is now hitting .270 with a .370 on-base percentage, .371 slugging and 23 strikeouts. After 18 games in 2007, Wright was hitting .261 with a .363 OBP, .333 SLG and 20 Ks.
  • Murphy was booed a little, too, in his first at-bat after the tumble.
  • Carlos Beltran got caught stealing when he didn’t slide going into second in the bottom of the third. According to Manuel, Beltran thought he heard the bat make contact with the ball.
  • Young Nats starter Jordan Zimmermann looked strong, allowing six hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings while fanning five. Carlos Delgado’s triple off Justin Maxwell’s glove was the only extra-base hit Zimmermann allowed.
  • After Zimmermann spent a long half-inning watching Ollie and Casey Fossum struggle in the top of the 5th, the Mets got the first two batters on base in the bottom of the frame. Then Murphy popped out, Beltran struck out and Delgado fouled out.
  • Fans at Citi Field have taken to throwing the ball back when opposing players hit home runs, like at Wrigley Field.
  • The sweet and sour chicken fingers available in left field are pretty tasty, plus they come with the red plastic Nathan's bident (like a trident, but with two prongs). They're a little gooey to eat without a fork and knife, though.
The Game Ball:

  • The game ball gets hurled back onto the field in disgust.
