Mets assistant GM John Ricco said the team will put a new emphasis on defense in 2018.
As a team, the Mets ranked 17th in fielding percentage (.984), 16th in ultimate zone rating (-0.3), 20th in defensive rating (-7.3) and 21st in range runs (-6.7) last season.
"That is one area we collectively think we need to be a little stronger," Ricco said Thursday during an appearance on Mets Hot Stove on SNY.
While Mets outfielders ranked third in ultimate zone rating (13) and second basemen made the fewest errors (six) and had the No. 2 fielding percentage (.991), their shortstops ranked 25th in fielding percentage (.967) and made 21 errors. Catchers ranked 24th in defensive rating (10.3) and gave up the fifth-most stolen bases (102) last season.
"We have had several decent players, but as a group I don't think we valued it as much as we need to," Ricco said about the team's priority on defense. "[GM] Sandy [Alderson] is never going to leave; he is a big offense guy. I think that you will see us focus a little bit more on the defense."
