Mets GM Sandy Alderson said on Friday that he would be willing to make a trade with the Yankees.
The Mets and Yankees haven't made a player-for-player trade since 2004, when Mike Stanton was traded for Felix Heredia. RH reliever Gonzalez Germen was traded from the Mets to the Yankees in 2014 in exchange for cash considerations.
The Yankees have interest in LH reliever Jerry Blevins, according to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, and are reportedly interested in acquring additional late-inning relief help and a first baseman -- even though they just dealt for Brewers minor league 1B Garrett Cooper.
The Mets are open to dealing any player who is not under team control beyond next season -- a list that includes RH reliever and current closer Addison Reed, 1B Lucas Duda, outfielders Jay Bruce and Curtis Granderson, and infielders Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera.
The Mets hold a team option on Blevins for the 2018 season.
The Cubs acquired LHP Jose Quintana in a trade with the White Sox on Thursday. Prior to Thursday, the last time the Cubs and White Sox made a trade with one another was 2006.
In the deal, the White Sox picked up OF Eloy Jimenez, RHP Dylan Cease, and infielders Matt Rose and Bryant Flete. Jimenez is MLB.com's No. 8 overall prospect. He and Cease were the Cubs' top two prospects.
White Sox GM Rick Hahn said the idea that he would take a lesser offer for Quintana from a team besides the Cubs because of their proximity was "laughable."
"The notion that any of us would at any point take an inferior deal simply because of emotion or something not related to what we envision for this franchise, that we would take less when the Cubs clearly had the best offer is laughable," Hahn said, according to the Chicago Sun Times.
Quintana, 28, has a 4.49 ERA (4.01) FIP and 1.32 WHIP with 40 walks and 109 strikeouts in 104 1/3 innings this season. In six seasons with the White Sox, he has a 3.51 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. Quintana is under contract through the 2020 season. He'll earn $8.85 million in 2018, followed by $10.5 million in both 2019 and 2020.
