Now Commenting On:

Curtis Granderson, Chris Young, Juan Lagares and Eric Young Jr. will compete for the starting outfield, which will mostly be determined by who hits best in spring training, Sandy Alderson told WFAN in Tuesday.

According to Alderson, Chris Young was only promised at bats, he was never promised playing time at a specific position.

That said, center field will likely come down to him or Lagares, with Lagares getting the spring's first official start.

Granderson will start in either left or right field, "He wasn't signed to be a center fielder," Alderson said.

If choosing between these four, my hunch is Eric Young will end up on the bench, at least to open the year. The Mets keep talking about Chris Young as a potential 20-home run guy. If they see him that way, and they're giving him $7 million, how do they not get him as much playing time as possible? If he plays well, and the team struggles, he could be this year's Marlon Byrd and could be traded later in the summer. If he rides the pine, that becomes less likely.

So, my early bet is Granderson in left, Chris Young in right, Lagares in center. But, that can easily change by May or if they can sign Nelson Cruz, though that now seems unlikely...
