Now Commenting On:

Scott Atchison has tenderness in his right elbow and will soon be evaluated by team doctors, Terry Collins told reporters after tonight's game.

According to Marc Carig of Newsday, Atchison said he felt numbness and tingling and he could not feel the baseball in his hand.

Atchison allowed a run on three hits without recording an out with two outs in the seventh inning in tonight's 6-3 loss to the Cardinals - he now has a 4.50 ERA and has appeared in 19 of the team's 35 games so far this season.

It's worth mentioning Atchison dealt with an elbow problem last season which caused him to miss a significant amount of time while with the Red Sox...

Atchison is 37, and he's pitching way too frequently with not enough rest in between outings. He is a good pitcher with a track record, but this is not the way he should be used. However, the way Terry Collins has used him has been mostly out of need, as has been the case with mostly everyone in the bullpen.

Eventually, the lack of innings from the rotation leads to overuse, overexposure, and potentially injured arms in the bullpen. Hopefully, Atchison simply needs to rest and it's nothing more than some burn in the elbow, but this just doesn't sound like good news for him.
