As the Mets climbed out of an early two-run hole for Friday's 4-2 win over the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field, 1B Pete Alonso gave New York a boost and made some history in the process.
Alonso's first-inning solo shot off Braves LHP Dallas Keuchel (8-8, 3.75 ERA) put the Mets on the board before the offense came alive in the third and fourth innings with three more runs to mount the comeback.
But the long ball meant more to Alonso, who went 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored as the Mets (84-76) beat the Braves (97-63).
With his 52nd of 2019, Alonso tied the single-season rookie home run record set by Yankees RF Aaron Judge in 2017 -- and he still has two more games for the chance to stand all alone at the top.
Regardless of what happens from here on out, two of the MLB's best power hitters reside with New York's teams, giving the local media a chance to get creative when Saturday's newspapers went to press.
Here's how the back pages in NYC reacted to Alonso tying Judge...
