Now Commenting On:

Can you feel that short-season pennant fever? The Cyclones and K-Mets can.

SSA: @ Brooklyn Cyclones 2, Staten Island Yankees 1

Miller Diaz (6-3, 2.01) was very good again: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 9 K. I was told recently that the 21-year-old has been throwing 89-95, sitting 92-93. He's been dominant in the month of August: 5 starts, 1.37 ERA, 26.1 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 13 BB, 35 K. However, note that even while rolling through the NYP, he's still walking 4.5 batters per nine. That's a whole lot.

The Cyclones remain one half game up on the Aberdeen Ironbirds for first place in the McNamara Division with six games to play in the NYP regular season.

R (APP): @ Kingsport Mets 9, Bluefield Blue Jays 1

Back in the leadoff spot, CF Champ Stuart was 3-for-5 with a double and a homerun, his first as a professional. This year's sixth rounder has hit .245/.388/.361 with 32 walks against 56 strikeouts in 42 games. Stuart, who will be 21 in October, should headline the Savannah Sand Gnats' Opening Day outfield next year. He's hit safely in eight of his last nine games while hitting .314/.400/.457 in his last 10 contests.

Oddly, Dominic Smith did not start, but entered as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. He was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles. He's reached base in all four of his Appy League plate appearances.

The KMets who clinched a division title with their win Thursday, complete their regular season tonight.

R (GCL): @ GCL Mets 4, GCL Marlins 1

So ends the GCL season.

SS Luis Guilorme ended with two hits in the final game of the year. He finished .258/.337/.283 in 41 games with 17 walks against 17 strikeouts. For a guy who had a reputation as a strong defender, that is a very solid debut with the stick.
