The Cyclones had a rough weekend series losing two out of three to the Lake Monsters.
Cory Mazzoni, the Mets 2nd round pick, did make his first professional start on Sunday. Mazzoni (pictured), who is working just one inning stints due to an innings limit this season, struck out the side and also hit a batter in his lone inning of work.
Mazzoni's season stats: 6 IP, 5 hits, 0 runs, 2 bb, 10 K.
Travis Taijeron continues to swing the bat well going 4-9, 2B, HR (7), and and an RBI over the weekend. Taijeron is currently enjoying a 9-game hitting streak where he is hitting .433 (13-30) with two doubles, a triple, four home runs, and 10 rbi's.
Akeel Morris, 2010's 10th round pick continues to impress. On Saturday, Morris allowed just one run over his five innings of work, while striking out nine. He allowed four hits and also walked four.
For the season, Morris is averaging an impressive 12.7 K/9, and leads the Appalachian League with 49 strikeouts (34 2/3 IP). He is also holding opponents to a .189 average, but on the flip side he leads the league with 21 walks (5.4 BB/9).
Brett Mitchell was the story on Sunday. Mitchell pitched eight innings, giving up just three hits and one run. He also walked two and struck out three.
