“One of the easy things to do is say, ‘Hey, listen. This guy’s stuff will play in the bullpen right now,’" DePodesta said. "But, I think we’ll always keep a thought in the back of our mind, that these guys have the potential to give us some length.”
DePodesta referenced the Texas Rangers, who have successfully used multiple pitchers in both roles; C.J. Wilson, Alexi Ogando, and Neftali Feliz.
“The Rangers have shown over and over again that it can be done,” he explained.
In what is a very limited sample, this year, Mejia has allowed one run and four base runners in three innings in relief for the Mets, while giving up five runs and 17 base runners in eight innings as a starter.
Familia has only pitched in relief since joining the Mets. However, he was a starter earlier in the year in the minor leagues. In six big-league innings as a reliever, he has allowed eight earned runs and 11 base runners.
