As the Mets complied their initial list of possible candidates to lead baseball operations, prominent agent Casey Close was among the wide range of people they considered.
But, as it turns out, the team never ended up interviewing Close. And according to a person familiar with Close's thinking, he did not seek the job and was not interested in leaving his behind his career as an agent.
Close has been friends with Mets COO Jeff Wilpon for years, and most recently worked with him on Michael Cuddyer's contract and retirement agreement. But the two have not spoken since the end of the season.
Back when the Mets thought of Close, they also had the idea of interviewing another prominent agent, Brodie Van Wagenen. Van Wagenen is now one of three finalists for the job, along with Doug Melvin and Chaim Bloom.
