Right-hander Jacob deGrom tossed six innings of two run ball and the 51s bats came alive late, breaking a 2-2 tie in the 8th inning with four runs in a 6-3 win in Salt Lake City.
Pitching line for deGrom: 6IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 3K. He was not involved in the decision but lowered his era to 3.93 in 12 AAA starts. Sunday was his fourth consecutive start of six innings or more and sixth in his last seven. He had allowed 12 earned runs in his previous 22 2/3 innings coming in. deGrom is now up to 140 2/3 innings this season between three levels and is probably nearing his innings limit after throwing 112 1/3 last season.
With the game tied 2-2 in the 8th inning, the 51s loaded the bases on a single by Ruben Tejada and a pair of walks. Lucas Duda was called upon to pinch hit and drove in the go-ahead run with a sac fly to put the 51s ahead for good. They would add three more runs that inning on back-to-back doubles by Brandon Hicks (11) and Francisco Pena (12).
Seems like Lucas Duda's bat is starting to come around. With at least one hit in seven of his last 10 AAA starts, his slash line of .300/.420/.350 is substantially better than it looked just a week ago. The RBI Sunday was his 5th in 13 games for the 51s.
Notes: Matt den Dekker was 0-4....Ruben Tejada was 1-5, run....The 51s have two more games in SLC before returning to Vegas to start a five game series with Fresno Wednesday.
