They lost Monday, Wednesday and Thursday to the start the season to the Nationals, who are an odds-on-favorite to make the World Series this season.
“We’re a lot better team defensively, we’re a lot better team offensively than we’re seeing right now,” Terry Collins said after his team's most recent loss. “It’s three days. It certainly leaves a sour taste in your mouth when you start out the season like this. But I can tell you a few teams that ended up being pretty good that got off to slow starts.”
I don't disagree, but you are what your record says you are, Terry. Simply put, if you're better, be better. Again, as I wrote Thursday on MetsBlog, there is going to be little room for error given the competition the next few weeks. It's going to be a grind.
The first base situation will stabilize, the bullpen will be at least a little better, guys will eventually get promoted from Triple-A and not every team they face will be favorites to win the World Series. That said, April is not going to be easy, no matter how much better Terry gets his guys to play. It's going to be a rough start, but I'm OK with that knowing what the rest of the season can have in store.
