Now Commenting On:

In a report for the New York Post, Kevin Kernan says Zack Wheeler and Matt Harvey will be next to each other when Major League camp opens next week in Port St. Lucie.

“Matt can help Zack in so many ways,’’ Collins explained to Kernan. “I want him to learn from Matt and the quickest way for any of our young pitchers to get called up is put up dominating numbers in the minor leagues."

Wheeler intends to work with Harvey this Spring in an attempt to learn from him, telling Kernan, "I’m here to soak in all the information I can and just do my best.’’

During voluntary workouts, Wheeler's locker was directly across from Harvey's, but I noticed Wheeler was working with Harvey, even at this juncture of Spring Training. I watched them participate in pitchers fielding practice together, and even shag flyballs together during batting practice. It's not only important Wheeler learns from Harvey, but it's also important for both of them to get to know each other better and feed off each other. Remember, these two have never played with each other at any level; the only time they could have possibly spent together was in Minor League camp last Spring. I expect these two will also be spending a lot of time with Travis d'Arnaud this Spring as well - it's going to be important for him to create a dynamic with these two right off the bat, something d'Arnaud told me is one of his greatest strengths as a catcher.
