The Mets were smart to hire Michey Callaway to be their new manager, Indians skipper Terry Francona said Wednesday during an interview with SNY's Steve Gelbs.
Prior to joining the Mets, Callaway had been Francona's pitching coach in Cleveland.
"They're getting a star," Francona said. "He interviewed off the charts. He got the job and then a couple years later you feel like you're brothers."
Callaway's pitching staffs iin Cleveland posted an American League-best 3.30 ERA and never finished lower than seventh in his five seasons with the team. His ace, Corey Kluber, won the AL Cy Young Award in 2014 and 2017.
"He is gonna be really, really good at whatever he wants to do, whether it's a National League manager or pitching coach," Francona added. "The Mets got a good one."
