According to Sandy Alderson's often-referenced Pythagorean W-L record, though they now have a -4 run differential and they have played like a team that should be 60-60 (Baseball-Reference, Aug. 13). Instead, they are 57-63 and in fourth place in the NL East.
Nevertheless, despite being six games back of the Wild Card with 42 games to play, Terry Collins said Tuesday he still believes his team can make a run at the playoffs.
"I'm really excited, because I think September's going to mean something," Collins said.
Alderson later said he doesn't disagree, though he also said finishing at or above .500 is an important goal for the organization.
The Mets haven't been above .500 since the first week of May.
