2:28 pm: Sandy Alderson said Cano's agents delivered a well-prepared and overdone presentation and no money was discussed (Puma).
2:21 pm: Alderson acknowledged that the meeting occurred (Rubin).
2:00 pm: The Mets simply used the opportunity to get to know Jay Z's new talent agency, according to people familiar with the meeting (Rubin).
10:52 am: The Mets told Cano’s agents, before agreeing to meet, that chances of a deal were slim, but they did not want to say no to the meeting knowing the two sides could do business together on future deals (Rosenthal).
5:24 am: Well, that's one way to spend your entire off-season budget, I guess... From what I can gather, Jay Z called the meeting... not the Mets. The goal was to -- more or less -- introduce himself and his new agency, Roc Nation Sports, and pitch his client, Cano, probably as a warm up for actually sitting down with the Yankees, which he has yet to do.
I suppose Jay Z thinks the Yankees will be spooked by him talking to the Mets, which they're now aware of after it leaked to the Post. But, Alderson has been pretty clear in public about not wanting to give out another $100-million contract, and Cano is looking for three times that amount. I guess anything is possible, and who knows how desperate the Mets are these days, but I find it very hard to believe Alderson is planning to go toe-to-toe with the Yankees over Cano.
