After starting his AAA career with three consecutive solid pitching performances, right-hander Jacob deGrom struggled for the first time Thursday night in Tucson. The native Floridian gave up six earned runs on eight hits in five innings for his first loss since joining the 51s. It's the most runs he's allowed since May 21 when he surrendered seven to New Britain while pitching for Binghamton, seven starts ago. In his previous three appearances for the 51s, deGrom had limited his opponents to two runs in 19 innings.
After having his 13 game hitting streak come to an end last night, Wilmer Flores got back to business. The Vegas second sacker went 2 for 5 on Independence Day, including his PCL-leading 28th double and 65th rbi of the season.
Fresh off his return to the Vegas lineup after a short stint in the big leagues, Zach Lutz launched his eight homer of the season in the 2nd inning. He entered the game with a .286/.372/.481 slash line and is now likely to play first base most often after the departure of Ike Davis.
Brandon Hicks continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 4 with his sixth homerun of the season leaving the yard in the 9th inning. He's hit safely in six of the last seven games, going 12 for 29 (.413) over that span.
Notes: Ruben Tejada went 0 for 5 and is now 1 for 10 on rehab in AAA....Matt den Dekker was hitless in four AB and now 0 for 15 overall since returning from injury....Ike Davis and Greg Burke were both recalled by the Mets. The 51s fell to 45-40.
