Rafael Montero pitched just 3.2 innings Friday, after which Terry Collins used his entire bullpen in a 14-inning loss to the Phillies.
In in order to make room for Carlyle, Montero could be optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas, according to a source (ESPN, May 30).
Carlyle, 36, is 1-1 with a 1.27 ERA in 21.2 innings in 18 relief appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas. He has seven years of big-league experience with the Padres, Dodgers, Braves and Yankees.
I'd hate to see Montero get sent down, especially after one bad start. But, a move was going to have to come once Dillon Gee is promoted in a week or so anyway. In this scenario, to open the spot, which would presumably mean Daisuke Matsuzaka stepping into the rotation, potentially until Dillon Gee returns from the disabled list. In this scenario, I assume Daisuke Matsuzaka will get a spot start or two until Gee gets back.
