SNY recently caught up with Jeff McNeil near his hometown in California, where it was batter up as he got into the cage and stepped into a video game to see if he can "hit" the high score.
The man throwing batting practice to McNeil in the video is Vince Sagisi, a former Indians scout who helped facilitate McNeil's baseball career.
"It's kind of been a magical ride for Jeff," Sagisi said. "He was discouraged he wasn't getting scholarship offers in golf, so he made his own road in baseball."
When Sagisi was asked by a college recruiter for help finding a middle infielder, he understood his suggestion of McNeil would be met with skepticism. After all, Division I baseball prospects are usually hitting home runs in high school, not 5-irons.
Sagisi was managing a scout team in 2009, and he remembers vividly -- as only a scout could -- exactly how a rail-thin junior impressed to the point that his entire career path was altered.
