The Mets signed RHP Wanel Mesa to a minor league contract, reported Baseball America.
The Mets and Blue Jays spent a lot of time together at the GM Meetings earlier in this month, Joel Sherman reported in the New York Post.
According to Sherman, the Blue Jays, Royals, Dodgers, Padres, Yankees, Red Sox, Twins, Angels, Rangers and Brewers are all teams motivated to trade for a front-of-the-rotation starting pitcher, like Dickey.
The Mets have been seeking an outfield bat and right-handed hitting catcher this winter, the Daily News reported last week. As Sherman points out, the Blue Jays now have two power-hitting young catchers in Travis d’Arnaud and J.P. Arencibia (drafted by J.P. Ricciardi), two athletic center fielders in Rajai Davis and Anthony Gose.
The Mets and Jays talked a lot last season, so much so that people close to the team often mentioned Jon Niese and d’Arnaud. No deal ever materalized, but, with Sherman’s report, plus Ricciardi’s knowledge of their farm system, it stands to reason these teams would again be talking. Also, though reports suggest the Mets have not been proactive in fielding trade offers for Dickey, that’s not what I’ve heard; and I’m happy to see Sherman report something similar. The Mets are talking to teams about Dickey. Is it to trade him? Or, just to gauge his value around the league? I don’t know… time will tell. But, based on other team's perceptions around the game, he’s very much available, as the Mets are also working to try and sign him to an extension. It's a complicated business, this baseball.
I think things will pick up this week, for all teams, since the MLB Winter Meetings start December 3; and teams quite often like to get loose ends tightened up before those meetings begin...
In other, some-what related hot stove news (and rumor) around MLB...
The Braves, Phillies and a mystery team are in a bidding war over free-agent OF B.J. Upton, who is eager to sign a new deal this week, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network.
In the event they lose out on Upton, the Phillies and Nationals could look to try and trade for Rockies OF Dexter Fowler.
However, Colorado's asking price for Fowler is 'absurd,' just like the rest of the trade market for center fielders.
The Marlins are getting calls on Giancarlo Stanton, though there are no indications Miami wants to move him.
Things are quiet with free-agent OF Grady Sizemore, his agent said.
Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera, Astros SS Jed Lowrie and Marlins SS Yunel Escobar can all be had in trade.
Right-handed hitting 1B-3B Mark Reynolds is among close to a hundred player who could be non-tendered and made a free agent at the end of this week, when teams must decide whether to offer contracts to players under team control.
Multiple reports suggest the Mets are likely to non-tender OF Andres Torres and RHP Mike Pelfrey and Manny Acosta.
