The Gnats had a rough weekend in Hickory, dropping three of four after taking five of six on their last homestand.

Having seen this team for almost 70 games this year, there's relatively little I learn from four box scores. However, there are a few performances worth highlighting.

Thursday, RHP Domingo Tapia: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K. The box score has 12 groundball outs to one flyball out. Think the 20-year old had the sinker working? For video on Tapia, check here, from Mike Newman of Fangraphs.

Sunday, RHP Michael Fulmer: 5.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 HR. After a dominant July, the 19-year old's ERA has gone up in August, but he's also made two starts in more hitter-friendly ballparks like Asheville and Hickory. In both months, his K/BB has been at three or more. Take the big picture here, in 11 starts in the first half, he had a 3.35 ERA in 51 innings with a 2.3 K/BB ratio (44 K/19 BB). In 10 starts in the second half, he's run a 2.20 ERA in 57.1 innings with a K/BB of an even three (57 K/19 BB).

A six-game hitting streak has taken 2012 second-round pick Matt Reynolds (pictured) to .258/.331/.348 in 41 games. That's not real sexy, but after a slow start (.214/.288/.286 in his first 26 games), the 21-year old is hitting .333/.406/.456 in 15 games in August. He's played exclusively at shortstop defensively for the Gnats, but the Mets do not view him as an everyday shortstop in the big leagues.
