The Mets are still without Steven Matz and Jason Vargas, and while both continue to throw, manager Mickey Callaway said Tuesday that there wasn't a set return date for either. But that doesn't mean a return for one or both isn't imminent.
Matz, who is dealing with a nerve issue, played catch on Tuesday and has been having regular bullpen sessions.
Vargas, who has a hamstring issue, threw a bullpen session on Tuesday.
Callaway added that both pitchers would be reassessed on Wednesday and that both were realistic options to return during the Mets' series that starts Friday night against the Marlins in Miami.
Matz is eligible to return from the IL on Wednesday, while Vargas is eligible to return on Thursday.
Because of scheduled off-days and a rainout, the Mets have been able to get by the last week or so without having to use a fifth starter. In the fourth spot, they used Wilmer Font last week and will have him pitch again on Wednesday against the Nationals.
After the current turn through the rotation, though, the Mets will need to go back to using five starters since they are about to begin a stretch of 20-straight games without an off-day.
