Now Commenting On:

Mets SS Wilmer Flores is expected to start at shortstop early next week (ESPN NY, Mar. 7).

Flores has not started a game at shortstop since Single-A St. Lucie in 2011, he said last week.

Terry Collins said he has considering Flores, as opposed to Anthony Seratelli, for a back-up infielder on the big-league roster this season (ESPN NY, Mar. 6).

I want to see him play regularly at shortstop, so we can all get a better sense of him in that type of role. I'm not sure it will matter, because I still believe he'll end up starting the year in Triple-A Las Vegas. But, it will be good to have an idea where he may fit in down the road. In the event Ruben Tejada is the starting shortstop, and Ike Davis starts at first base, I expect Seratelli, Anthony Recker, Josh Satin, Lucas Duda and Juan Lagares/Eric Young Jr. to be on the bench. It's acquiring SS Nick Franklin or free-agent SS Stephen Drew that will have a bigger impact on the roster than how Flores does in spring games at shortstop.
