FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? The story of Jets wide receiver Clyde Gates was supposed to be told on the hardwood and not the gridiron.

Meet the soft-spoken and shy Gates, a second year wide receiver who last year played 15 games in Miami. Gates is one of the unheralded names in a Jets locker room filled with stars and superstars but like so many of the lesser known players on this team, his story is intriguing. Prior to college, he played just one year of high school football and saw no future in it.

The story goes that Abilene Christian football head coach Chris Thomsen came to visit Bernard Scott, the Bengals running back, at home one evening and Gates was there along with his brother. Thomsen offered Scott the chance to play college football and Scott encouraged his cousin to go to college with him.

The Giants were behind the Dolphins for the better part of three and half quarters this afternoon only to thrill (or relieve) the antsy crowd in the final minutes, topping the winless Dolphins, 20-17.

Eli Manning (31-49 2 TD) hit Victor Cruz with his longest completion of the day - a 26-yard strike - with 5:58 left on the clock to put the Giants ahead for the first time, sealing the win for the now 5-2 Blue.

The finsiders.com blog does a great job covering the Miami Dolphins. Even if you're not a Dolphin fan, it's chock full of great stuff including video analysis with host Jesse Agler.

Columnist John Congemi provides his three keys for the Dolphins to hang with the Giants this afternoon. The first, of course, is to slow down the Giants' pass rush. The second key is to win the early downs:

Manning and the Giants offense hasn?t fared much better than the Dolphins offense on third down early in this season (31.5 percent), and that?s where Miami must create the turnover or get off the field. Six sacks last week on Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow was a great start, but Manning will get rid of the football much quicker than Tebow...

As they Giants come off their bye week, they appear to have been served a gimmie as they face the reeling and still winless Miami Dolphins (0-6) this Sunday.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have extolled the virtues of never overlooking opponents and falling into ?trap? games, but if the Giants can?t win this week, they?ll have some serious problems.

As the Giants get ready for the brutal schedule that awaits them after this week, the Dolphins pose as the perfect team to feast on after the bye.

Week 8 of this NFL season isn't going to keep anyone riveted to the barcolounger this weekend. there us only one contest that features opponents with winning records: New England (5-1) at Pittsburgh (5-2).

The Giants (4-2) will play host to the Miami Dolphins (0-6) in one of the many unattractive matchups on the schedule this week.

Miami is one of three winless team's in the league right now and the fans are already looking towards next year's draft, in which the grand prize is Stanford QB Andrew Luck.

1. Cameron Wake

The former Nittany Lion is easily the most dangerous player on Miami's defense, with five of the teams 15 sacks thus far. The outside linebacker had 15 sacks last year, and has very quickly turned into one of the league's best pass rushers.

The Giants' offensive line did a great job of keeping Bills' defenders off of Eli Manning in their last game, but have had some breakdowns in protection this year. With David Baas and Chris Snee fully healthy, the pass blocking should be back to 100%. If the Dolphins have any chance of winning this game, they are going to need to get to Manning, and that all starts with Wake.

Ahmad Bradshaw's agent said last night on a Miami sports show that his client would be interested in staying in Florida (where he is currently training) and playing for the Miami Dolphins.

OK. Tell us something we don't know. Bradshaw's agent is none other than Drew Rosenhaus, who shops all his clients to the max in order to secure the best deal for the player...and himself.

Bradshaw wants to stay here and play for the Blue, who say they want him back. The feeling is mutual, but Rosenhaus is notorious for lobbing salvos across the bows of NFL teams.

from SNY collaborator Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger....

The Giants have signed three more players to reserve/future contracts for the 2011 season: RB Martell Mallett, OL Ike Ndukwe and DE Ayanga Okpokowuruk.

Mallett was with the Eagles in camp last season. He rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries in the preseason opener before gaining only 37 yards on his final 12 attempts of the preseason. He was briefly on the team's practice squad before being released. He was later on the Browns' practice squad for two months and returned to the Eagles' practice squad for the postseason.

ESPN reports that the Miami Dolphins are looking to trade defensive end Jason Taylor in exchange for a first round draft pick.

The Dolphins have already signed Jake Long as the first pick of the 2008 NFL Draft and are looking to secure another first round pick because the next player they want may not make it around to their next pick in round two.

Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel speculates that the Dolphins would trade up for either Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey, Auburn defensive end Quentin Groves, Michigan quarterback Chad Henne or Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco.
