Michael Boley

If you watched HBO's Hard Knocks this past month, you saw the process in which the Cincinnati Bengals arrived at their 53-man roster and practice squad. One position they looked fairly deep at was linebacker, but injuries have thinned them out.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bengals are bringing in former Giant LB Michael Boley for a look-see...

The fourth overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, Aaron Curry has already played and been released by two teams.

With the Giants, he has a chance to not only shed the "bust" label but revive his career -- perhaps a last-ditch effort to do so.

During the first day of OTAs Wednesday, it was Mark Herzlich who lined up as the Giants middle linebacker.

It comes as a bit of a surprise as the team signed veteran free agent Dan Connor to compete -- and many believe -- take the job after Michael Boley was released and the team opted not to re-sign Chase Blackburn.

In related linebacking news, Herzlich was flanked by Spencer Paysinger and Keith Rivers, not Jacquian Williams.

Today marks the first of two New York Giants organized team activity sessions set for this week at the Timex Performance Center in East Rutherford, N.J.

And for a team that did not make the playoffs in 2012, there are a plethora of storylines as new faces and veterans in need to reviving their image return to the field.

In a Football Outsiders piece on ESPN Insider, the analysts suggest linebacker remains the New York Giants' biggest red flag heading into 2013.

FBO calls the current starting trio -- Dan Connor, Keith Rivers and Jacquian Williams -- a patchwork unit, which is the M.O. for Giants general manager Jerry Reese.

"For a team with such a rich a history at the linebacker position, it's hard to remember the last time the Giants had even one really good player in their linebacking corps."
FBO criticizes the Giants' off-season plan of attack to address its less-than-mediocre linebacking corps, failing to draft a premier prospect and signing Aaron Curry via free agency.

Free agents Aaron Curry and Josh Cribbs both left their visits with the New York Giants without contracts, according to reports.

Curry, the former fourth overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft who has been since cut by both the Seahawks and Raiders, took a physical with the team. Questions remain about Curry's knees, as he has worked out for the Bengals and Bears without signing onto a team.

The Giants may be looking to add a veteran to the linebacking corps heading into training camp. The team did not address that position during the draft after parting ways with Michael Boley and Chase Blackburn this off-season.

In Rotoworld's newly configured post-NFL Draft lineup rankings, the New York Giants are slated at No. 11.

Offensively, the team re-signed left tackle Will Beatty and added Brandon Myers to replace Martellus Bennett, who signed with the Chicago Bears. Also making the lineup is first-round selection Justin Pugh, who is penciled in at left guard, as well as Victor Cruz, who has yet to re-sign with the team for the coming season.

Both Johnathan Hankins and Justin Pugh are poised to start for the New York Giants at the start of the season, Giants.com writer John Schmeelk writes.

Pugh and Hankins were the Giants' first and second-round selections in the 2013 NFL Draft, respectively. Pugh, the offensive tackle out of Syracuse, should start Week 1, filling an immediate need along the offensive line.

Giants.com writers believe Hankins could make an impact right away and eventually take over for Linval Joseph, while Schmeelk believes he'll be a Day 1 starter, alongside Pugh.

Following the news of the his "secret arrest" in February, the New York Giants are "very unlikely" to re-sign free-agent outside linebacker Michael Boley, according to reports.

Yesterday, reports released from TMZ.com indicated the former Giants linebacker, who was cut at the start of the off-season, was "secretly arrested" Feb. 8 in Etowah County, Ala. Boley then pled guilty to child abuse charges as part of a plea deal, then entered a pre-trial diversion program, after which the charges would be dropped.

According to a Giants spokesman, the team did not cut Boley on Feb. 5 because of his impending arrest.

According to the website TmZ.com, former Giants' LB Michael Boley has pled guilty to child abuse charges in his home state of Alabama. Boley was released by the club in February as part of the their cap relief exercise. Boley was due $4.25 million this season and had become a marginalized player by season's end. The legal issues probably made the decision to part ways with him an even more concise one. There have been rumors that the team may be interested in bringing him back, but nothing has been substantiated.

From TmZ:

Boley?was quietly arrested for child abuse back in February ... 3 days after he was cut by the team ... TMZ has learned.

Entering this past weekend's NFL Draft, linebacker was an area many speculated the Giants would need to address with young talent.

Yet the team chose not to draft a linebacker.

The Newark Star-Ledger's Jenny Vrentas has the same feeling. Boley, 31 in August, was released by the Giants in a salary cap move in February, and he hasn't drawn an ounce of known interest since. He could be back at the minimum if the Giants don't come away with a linebacker in the draft.

The NFL Draft is a mere three days away, so of course, all the rumors swirling around who is going to land where are beginning to heat up.

Numerous mock drafts have the Giants looking to bolster a couple different directions, including linebacker, offensive and defensive lines and the secondary. Among the players most commonly connected to Big Blue are linebackers Manti Te'o and Alec Ogletree, offensive tackle D.J. Fluker and cornerback Desmond Trufant.

Over the weekend, the New York Daily News diagnosed those same four positions as areas of need for the Giants in this year's draft, pointing out the linebacking unit lost Michael Boley and Chase Blackburn, and Mathias Kiwanuka has returned to the defensive line. It adds the offensive line -- aside from left tackle Will Beatty -- is aging; Justin Tuck and Kiwanuka are aging; and questions continue to surround cornerbacks Prince Amukamara and Jayron Hosley.

Starting in all 13 contests during his senior campaign at Rutgers, Beauharnais notched the third-highest totals in tackles (83), and ranked among the Big East leaders in tackles for loss (16), sacks (5) and interceptions (3).

In Mel Kiper Jr.'s first two-round mock draft, the longtime NFL Draft prognosticator suggests the New York Giants will select a cornerback and linebacker, respectively, with their first and second-round picks.

At No. 19, Kiper projects the Giants to draft cornerback Desmond Trufant from the University of Washington. The 6-foot, 190-pound former Huskie impressed at the NFL Combine, solidifying his status as a first-round talent.

NFL.com compares Trufant to Cardinals cornerback Antoine Cason, praising him for his size, athleticism and short-area foot quickness. However, experts believe he'll have to improve his overall strength on the professional level.

The Giants are in the business of finding of linebackers. A Florida Times-Union report now suggests they may be chasing the best on the market.

Jacksonville linebacker Daryl Smith, who missed the majority of the 2012 season with a groin injury, has been the stalwart of the team's interior defense for nine seasons.

In my free-agent forecaster, I predicted Smith would remain with the Jags largely because they cannot afford to let the veteran go. Despite the injury he suffered last season, there will certainly be a market for Pro Football Focus' top-rated backer.

The majority of the post-NFL Scouting Combine mock drafts, prognosticators believe the New York Giants will add an offensive player with the 19th pick in the first round.

Of the five most recently updated mocks, three project New York to draft an offensive tackle. Both NFL.com's Bucky Brooks and CBS Sports' Will Brinson predict former Alabama tackle D.J. Fluker will be a member of Big Blue at the end of April.

Tony Pauline of USA Today Sports went down a similar path, though instead of Fluker he expects the Giants to bolster the offensive line with one of the combine's most impressive athletes, Lane Johnson of Oklahoma.

Michael Boley was a productive outside linebacker for the Giants the past four seasons, especially down the stretch in 2011 ? the Giants? most recent Super Bowl winning season.

But football is a business, and with the imminent salary cap issues the Giants will face, Boley, who was due to earn $4.25 million in 2013, was released.

The move was not a total shock, but it now opens the door for the 25-year-old Jacquian Williams to slide into a starting role.

Some quick notes on the cutting of Michael Boley from our friend Jimmy Kempski of Blogging the Beast:

  • He turns 31 in August.
  • He was scheduled to make $4.25 million this season.
  • He was very banged up last season. He had back, hip and hammy issues. Just to note, that?s like one continuous pain going down his entire midsection. He also had knee issues in recent seasons. The Giants? doctors are smart, I would assume. They knew Steve Smith was done. Perhaps they know something about Boley.
  • His snaps were greatly diminished at the end of the season. Check out Weeks 15-17 (per ProFootballFocus):

Boley was by far the Giants? best linebacker the last few years, in my opinion, but his play fell off in 2012. Whether his release is a result of some sort of degenerative injury concern, or because they simply think the size of his contract is too prohibitive to keep him, going from ?Good Michael Boley? (whenever ?Good Michael Boley? ceased to exist) to whatever they replace him with could be a significant downgrade.

This season, the Giants lacked their signature pass rush, which had lifted them over the Patriots in Super Bowls twice and had set the tone for the rest of their defense.

Whether it's via free agency, the draft or trades, the Giants need to upgrade their pass rush, which will allow their linebackers to focus more on stopping the revent and their defensive backs on generating turnovers.

The heart and soul of the Giants D: the defensive line. Let's begin there.

The incident, which occurred this past spring, looks to be more of a money grab than anything else. The Giants will be without LB Michael Boley, who will miss his second straight game with a hamstring injury. He was listed as "doubtful" on Saturday, but he did not travel with the Giants to New Orleans on Sunday afternoon.

That would put the Giants' defense in the same predicament they were last week vs Philadelphia - with rookies in key spots. But this week they will have Drew Brees to contend with, not Vince Young. Brees leads the NFL in passing yards with 3,326.
