The Giants-Colts rivalry dates back to the late 1950s when Johnny Unitas and his Colts beat the Giants in "The Greatest Game Ever Played" in the 1958 NFL Championship Game at Yankee Stadium. A lot has happened since then, and the game has changed, but both franchises have been pumping out hall of famers ever since.

In case you've been living in a cave, Indianapolis has another possible future HOFer in QB Andrew Luck, the NFL's top passer. He is one of four top signal callers the Giants will face over the next four games (Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick and Tony Romo are the others).

The Giants will be without one of their defensive captains, MLB Jon Beason, who is out for the season after undergoing a procedure to fix his ailing foot. His replacement will be Jameel McClain, who has been manning the position in Beason's absence.

With Michael Strahan's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame comes the obvious question of retiring his uniform number (92).?No current player is wearing the number (perhaps at the behest of ownership) in possible preparation for it's permanent retirement.

When it comes to retiring jersey numbers, the Giants have been inconsistent. The Giants have only retired four uniform numbers since 1972. Frank Gifford (16) and Lawrence Taylor (56) are Hall of Famers, while Phil Simms (11) and Joe Morrison (40) are not.

Outside of those above four numbers, only eight others have received the honor in the 90 year history of the Giants: (1) Ray Flaherty; (4) Tuffy Leemans; (7) Mel Hein; (14) Ward Cuff and Y.A. Tittle; (32) Al Blozis; (42) Charley Conerly and (50) Ken Strong.

Former Giants' DE Michael Strahan is a finalist once again for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and once again Warren Sapp, who was elected last year, is deriding Strahan's candidacy.

Neil Best of Newsday, quoting Sapp:

"I don't think his resume stacks up when you put Tony Dungy, Walter Jones, Marvin Harrison and Derrick Brooks up. Those are four first-ballot Hall of Famers...When you stack it up and he only has four straight Pro Bowls and a mythical sack record that y'all still walk around like it's something to be praised - I mean y'all have got to get off your high horse in New York and speak about the real...And when you really measure him up, he comes up short."
Strahan actually has better numbers than Sapp and has been to seven Pro Bowls, the same number as Sapp. Strahan responded to Sapp's comments Tuesday afternoon.

SNYGiants insider Ralph Vacchiano passed this along, via his Sulia page:

Michael Strahan's response to Warren Sapp saying he's overrated by NY media (via @nydnraiss): "I'm all hype. I lasted 15 years on all hype. Had 141 1/2 career sacks. All hype. I was always a starter. The coaches put me out there because that was hype. I played left end, that made me get sacks. Reggie White, he was hyped too. Didn?t he play left end? Yeah, I was all hype." #NYG
Ralph also tweeted this comment from Giants CEO John Mara...

I?ve seen that guy in his 15 years take over games....I wish I could have played with him when he was a younger stud. But I feel as though he is a definitely a shoo-in for a Hall of Fame. It?s well-deserved......You think about the success he had and playing on the teams he played on ? he was a focal point for all those years and still being very successful. It?s a testament to how hard he worked and how talented he is.

?Of course, I mean who wouldn?t be disappointed if you made it this far?? Strahan told Dan Salamone of Giants.com this week. ?I mean I definitely would be disappointed, but at the same time, if I don?t make it in and somebody else does, that means they were just more deserving of it at that time. So I would love to make it in on the first ballot ? that would be an incredible thing ? but I understand how it works. And for me, that?s why I try my best not to get too excited because I don?t want to be too upset if I don?t make it in.?

THAT CAREER SPANNED 15 YEARS: From?the tail end of the Lawrence Taylor era to the beginning of the prime of the Eli Manning era; from Dan Reeves to Tom Coughlin; from the ridiculously non-matching navy blue helmets with all-caps ?GIANTS? to today?s retro ?ny;? from a doughier physique for Strahan to a streamlined late career version; from a franchise that was adrift following the advent of free agency to one of today?s most perennially successful.

He probably didn?t get along ? got along with less guys . . . because he wasn?t reaching out to a lot of the younger players."

Back to that Newsday?list I mentioned yesterday, the countdown of the Top 10 Giants of all-time. At No. 2 they have Michael Strahan, with the following explanation: "A former second-round pick, Strahan emerged into a sure-fire Hall of Famer once he became a fixture at left end. He played with great leverage and dominated offensive tackles far bigger and heavier. Strahan broke Lawrence Taylor's franchise sacks record by finishing with 141.5, and he capped a brilliant career with a Super Bowl run in his final season."? Of the 10 picks, this is the one I find to be the most debatable. What do you think? Is Michael Strahan the second best Giant of all-time?

In other Giants news:

ESPN New York's Ian O'Connor?just published a book on one New York captain. Now, he offers praise of another. Talking about Giants quarterback Eli Manning, O'Connor writes, "He speaks with more authority and stands with his shoulders square. The end-of-the-world loss to the Eagles last year didn't send Manning cowering behind a desk; he called a team meeting for the first time in his seven seasons, and made sure his was the only voice heard in the room." • Nine days until the 2011 NFL Draft....things are starting to pick up. ?There's no football going on, but hopefully that will change soon....
  • The NFL will release the 2011 schedule tonight at 7:00pm ET on the NFL Network. ?It has been widely speculated that the Giants will play the Jets on the first Sunday night of the season on national television. The relevance? It is the 10th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center that killed nearly 3,000 innocent American citizens.
  • The Giants will play the AFC East this season: the Bills and Dolphins at home and the Patriots on the road. ?The Jets will be the home team vs the Giants, but the Giants will be using all of their own facilities that game, so it is very much like a home game for the Blue.
  • Also on the 2011 docket are trips to New Orleans, San Francisco and Arizona and home games vs St. Louis, Seattle and Green Bay. ?These, of course, are in addition to the home-and-away affairs vs division rivals Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington.
  • This year's NFL game in London will take place on October 23rd and will feature the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Chicago Bears.
  • Alfred F. Kelly, Jr., the former president of American Express has been named the CEO of the 2014 Super Bowl organizing committee. ?Kelly will spearhead the effort to make the New York-area outdoor Super Bowl a memorable event - for the right reasons..
  • According to USA Today, former Giants great Michael Strahan is in the mix to replace Regis Philbin on the long-running Live With Regis and Kelly morning program when Philbin steps down later this year.

For the past 17 years the Giants organization has one major constant...a defensive end that was going to play the run or the pass with a ferocity that NFL teams would have to game plan around that player.

Until former Dallas Cowboys Offensive tackle Flozell Adams stuck his leg out and tripped NY Giants Defensive End, Justin Tuck in September of 2009.? That "bush league" play by Adams cost Justin Tuck more than a shoulder injury...it cost Tuck a season of mediocre play.

Former Giant Michael Strahan isn't blaming Tom Coughlin for the team's struggles. From ESPN New York:

"He has to just get these guys on the same page. As a coach you can only do so much, and you got to have some guys who are your leaders who can kind of control the situation and police each other.

"I read and see all this stuff ... losing control of the team," Strahan said. "There has been an evolution of Tom Coughlin, an evolution of being to the point where I felt early on it was almost unbearable to the point of where you realize he is right now."

Michael Strahan sacked Donovan McNabb more then any other Quarterback he ever played against, 12.5 times in total. Today, Donovan McNabb reflected on his time in the league with Strahan.

"We had a lot of fun," McNabb said. "Mike and I talked back and forth, laughing and joking during the game. But we'd continued to push each other. And we'd talk to each other maybe before the game, talk to each other after the game, and just try to bring the best out of one another. Will I miss him this week? No, unless he comes on the sideline in a suit and talks to me. I'm glad that he is not out there padding up wearing 92. I've told him that I appreciated him retiring and to stay retired. But he's had a great career. And I can at least say when I'm all said and done and I look back on my career, that I played with one of the best defensive players that ever played the game."

In today's New York Times, Michael Strahan breaks down four key plays that led to one of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history.

Among them is a play where linebacker Antonio Pierce, who calls the defensive plays, would wave his arms up and down to tell the defense to just line up and rush, basically a free for all, but while staying free of the ends.

The play was employed with 25 seconds left in the game, with the Giants having just scored the go-ahead touchdown, and Tom Brady was attempting to stage a last change drive of his own. Left tackle Jay Alfred took an inside route vacated by the center and caught a free lane to Brady.
