EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Tyler O'Connor threw three touchdown passes in the first half, and Michigan State snapped its seven-game losing streak with a 49-0 rout of Rutgers on Saturday in what was a matchup of the last two teams in the Big Ten without a conference win.

Now Rutgers (2-8, 0-7) is alone at the bottom of the league after the Spartans (3-7, 1-6) raced out to a 35-0 halftime lead. LJ Scott ran for 103 of his 122 yards in the first half, and Demetrious Cox returned an interception for a touchdown.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- For Rutgers, this scenario is a disappointment.

For Michigan State, it was unimaginable.

The Scarlet Knights and Spartans will meet in East Lansing on Saturday in a matchup between the only two winless teams in Big Ten play. Michigan State, which went to the national semifinals last season, has lost seven games in a row - yet is still favored by about two touchdowns. That's how badly this season has gone for Rutgers.

Chris Ash, in his first season as coach at Rutgers, was somewhat dismissive of the idea that the two teams are that similar.

Josh Jackson got the win over his close friend Miles Bridges on Monday in his return home to Michigan, and the Michigan State-bound Bridges would like his friend to join him in college, too.

"We've got to get him on the squad," Bridges told MILive.com after his Huntington (W.V.) Prep team lost to Jackson's Prolific Prep (CA) squad, 100-80, in the Throwdown in Motown event presented by The Grind Session at HYPE Recreation Center. "He plays the same position as me but I know Coach (Tom) Izzo will work it out for us."

Both players scored 22 points in the game.

Josh Jackson's recruitment remains in flux after the 6-foot-8 forward out of Prolific Prep (CA) attended Michigan State's 99-93 overtime victory against Oakland at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Tuesday night.

Several reports indicated Jackson had narrowed his recruitment to Arizona and Michigan State, but a source close to Jackson said it was not true. This Twitter account, which is the official source for Jackson information, also indicated the report wasn't true.

NEW YORK -- Tom Izzo's terrific year just got better.

The Michigan State coach was named Monday as a candidate for the Naismith Hall of Fame in the Class of 2016. Izzo is one of more than 100 candidates, including 26 coaches on the ballot.

Izzo is already coaching the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in undefeated Sparty (12-0) and he also has perhaps his best recruiting class ever lined up for 2016. That class is highlighted by Huntington (W.V.) Prep forward Miles Bridges, whom former Michigan State guard Travis Trice said is better than anyone on the current roster.

Following Oklahoma were Maryland, Virginia, Xavier, North Carolina, Arizona, Butler and Providence, which is in the top 10 for the first time since Jan. 17, 1978.

Michigan State senior guard Denzel Valentine, a leading contender for National Player of the Year honors, will miss 2-3 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday.

Spartans coach Tom Izzo announced the news on Monday after Valentine tore cartilage while going up for a layup on Sunday during practice.

"It's very, very minor," Izzo said, according to the Detroit News. "But we couldn't leave it in there. When it moves around it could not bother him for a week and then really bother him. This is best for him in the present and in the future."

CHICAGO -- Michigan State made sure Valentine's Day came about three months early on Tuesday night.

Denzel Valentine, the Spartans' senior star, became the fourth player in program history to record a triple-double to boost No. 13 Michigan State to a 79-73 victory over No. 4 Kansas in the second game of the State Farm Champions Classic.

Valentine had 29 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists and only a single turnover to lead the Spartans to a comeback after trailing by 11 with 9:21 remaining. Magic Johnson is the only other Michigan State player to record a triple-double against Kansas.
