This offseason, the Devils allowed Beau Bennett to walk in free agency and bought out the contract of forward Mike Cammalleri

Bennett, a UFA, signed a one-year deal worth $650,000 with the Blues after leaving New Jersey. The Devils never really made a serious offer to Bennett, who notched 19 points in 65 games.

Tied early in the third period with the Lightning, it had appeared the Devils had gained the lead on Andy Greene's goal, but an offside review took the score away and kept the game tied. Tampa Bay head coach Jon Cooper challenged the original call, which was then determined to be offside, as forward Mike Cammalleri jumped over the blue line just ahead of the play.

As thrilled as the New Jersey Devils are to have Mike Cammalleri return, the Ottawa Senators can't be happy it came in time for them to see him.

At least the Senators won't have to face Cammalleri for the rest of the regular season after closing a five-game trip Thursday night at New Jersey in a matchup of teams battling at the bottom of the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

This game comes two days after Cammalleri's return coincided with the Devils' highest-scoring game since Christmas. The 13-year veteran remains the team's points leader (36) despite missing eight games with a hand injury, and New Jersey (23-19-5) scored only eight goals in the last seven.

The New Jersey Devils have placed D Jon Merrill on IR with an upper body injury and activated F Michael Cammalleri off IR (Devils, Jan. 19).

Merrill will have his time on IR retroactive to Jan. 16.

Cammalleri, 33, has 14 goals and 21 assists in 38 games played this season. His 35 points are a team-high. He has been on IR since Dec. 30 while dealing with an upper body injury of his own.

Poor offense is back hurting the New Jersey Devils, and bad defense is plaguing the Colorado Avalanche again.

Those problems have dropped both clubs just outside the playoff picture but could result in one having a breakout performance Thursday night in Denver.

Yet, it was the Avalanche (21-20-3) who won a low-scoring affair in New Jersey on Dec. 1, winning 2-1 behind goals by Matt Duchene and Tyson Barrie. Colorado is 8-0-1 in the past nine matchups after winning the last five - all by one goal.

The New Jersey Devils have been much better on the road than at home, and that's also been true for Adam Henrique.

After losing for the third straight time at home, Henrique and the Devils go for a three-game road winning streak Thursday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.

New Jersey (12-10-2) is 7-4-0 away from Newark and averaging 2.72 goals compared to 1.92 at home. Scoring on home ice was an issue again Tuesday when the Devils outshot Colorado 28-25 only to lose 2-1.
