Lost in the excitement last night were the serious knee injuries to Giants' TEs Travis Beckum and ?Jake Ballard....

Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum were standing together as everyone else ran around on the field.

Their celebration was much simpler: a congratulatory tap of their crutches.

The Giants will be out on the practice filed again today at TIMEX in preparation for their upcoming NFC Divisional Playoff game against the Green Bay Packers this Sunday.

Players to watch: CB Aaron Ross and RB DJ Ware, who both suffered concussions in the WildCard win over Atlanta. Neither are key players on a normal day, but since both of their backups are rookies, their status is a concern.

Prince Amukamara will play in Ross' spot if he can't go. Da'Rel Scott will fill in for Ware. Keep in mind, the Giants' entire 2007 draft class - eight players - contributed significantly during their Super Bowl run four years ago.

SNY Insider Mike Garafolo of the Star Ledger reports that Giants' DC Perry Fewell is under contract until the end of next season and will likely return unless he is scooped up as a head coach by another franchise.

"Despite Steve Spagnuolo's being on the market after his being dismissed as Rams head coach, it appears the Giants are content with Fewell's performance. The team is ranked 27th in total defense, though the No. 1 seeds in each conference - the Patriots and Packers - are ranked 31st and 32nd, respectively."

I'm already on record as saying I smell an easy Giants victory here. Though I dropped that on SNY on Tuesday before I knew the extent of Hakeem Nicks' hamstring issue, I'm going to stick with it.

The Giants are 31st in the NFL in rushing and are not happy about it. Their offensive line, which once was a symbol of cohesiveness and strength is now seen as a weakness: they are getting whipped in the trenches. It's time for this to stop.

A change, perhaps, was needed. Unfortunately, it took a severe injury to LT Will Beatty for change to take place.

Beatty (eye) will be replaced by David Diehl at LT and Kevin Boothe will be inserted at guard. This may not sound like a big deal to Giant fans, but Diehl was the LT on the Giants' 2007 Super Bowl Championship team and Boothe is getting better every time out.

We all thought 49ers' TE Delanie Walker intentionally drew Giants' DE Dave Tollefson offsides by feigning a "shift". Walker did not shift at all. He stood up and moved backward a step. He never even appeared to be shifting. It was a false start and everyone knew it. Everyone except the officials....

"You have to understand that the intent to deceive is something that has to be determined," said Giants' coach Tom Coughlin. "The officials did not think that that was intent to deceive. We can disagree all we want. It happened before, on a fourth-and-one, for them and they were called for it. But it?s obvious that it?s a part of their plan and they execute it very well. On that particular play, the backside tight end did false start and that wasn?t called."

Our Mike Garafolo of the Star Ledger was out in SF covering the game as he always does. The Giants lost a football game to very good team last night, one that promises to be a participant in the postseason come January.

The Giants did not walk away from The Stick unscathed. ?In the process they lost starting CB Aaron Ross to a leg contusion and then OLB Michael Boley to a hamstring injury.

GM Jerry Reese has not had a presser since the beginning of training camp. He has not given us any insight into what the franchise is thinking nor what the overall plan is.

All we can do for you is draw conclusions based on his actions (or inactions) by connecting the dots. Right now, the dots are hard to find and few and far between at that.

"This year was the worst in my eight-year career as far as animosity toward that team. There?s a real hatred toward Philly and there?s a real hatred for them toward us. So it was rough out there. But I feel things like that stay on the football field. Off the field, we respect each other because at the end of the day we?re all brothers. But he decided to take it so far that there?s no going back from it now."

Osi Umenyiora told that to our insider Mike Garafolo last week after Eagles' RB LeSean McCoy took a cheap shot at him on Twitter. ?Osi said the comments won't be forgotten, even if he's no longer with the Giants.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are best known for their basketball program. But this year, they had an unprecedented nine players selected in the NFL Draft.

One player selected from UNC was the Giants' second rounder, DT Marvin Austin, who would have been a first round selection had he not been suspended for violating a draconian NCAA rule.

One reason for the increased interest by the NFL in Chapel Hill these days is the approach by head coach Butch Davis, who is a former NFL head and assistant coach with an impressive track record of success.

Personally. I thought the 32-year-old Seubert might have packed it in after this injury, but knowing his resolve, it didn't make much sense. Last year, he went from odd-man-out to arguably the team's MVP.

Jones was the team's third round selection in last year's draft, but never made it to camp. You may recall he was the player that was badly injured in a SUV wreck last June. Jones' leg was severely injured in the crash. He suffered a broken tibia and fibula as well as extensive nerve and vascular damage. He has been slowly fighting his way back, but it has been an uphill battle thus far...

From SNY contributor Mike Garafolo:

The question in many people's minds when the Giants placed Victor Cruz on injured reserve last week was how could a team IR a guy who was planning to return to action this week?

The NFL apparently had the same question. And in the end, they concurred with the Giants' decision.

"The simple fact is this: We have a lot of guys in this locker room that have been in a lot of wars and being on all those teams and seeing it like that. I've been on this team when we've been dominant. I've been on this team when we looked like crap. And I can see the difference. So every year leadership is going to be created in a different form. You get new players and they've seen it work one way and like an old person, they kind of get stuck in their ways. But it's a Giant way, and we're going to do it the Giants way. And we're going to figure out that way this year because Super Bowl year it was one way. We went 11-1, that was another way. We'll figure it out. I mean we'll be OK. We're 1-1. It's been two games so I'm not really?it's kind of comical to me that we're discussing this right now, but I'm a leader and I'm a captain and I'll address it and I'll do my best to rectify the wrong."

"With their depth at cornerback questionable at best, the Giants brought in a few players at the position for a workout Tuesday.

One of them was 11-year veteran Dre' Bly, who was recently released by the Lions. The 33-year-old Bly, a starter with the Rams, Lions and Broncos from 2002-08, spent last season with the 49ers, for whom he recorded three interceptions. Bly has 43 regular-season interceptions in his career.

According to Ralph Vacchiano the early reports on McKenzie is a sprained knee and??a sore shoulder for Rich Seubert. Seubert has been playing with?the pain in his shoulder since early in training camp. Most likely this is a re-aggravation of the same injury. The offensive line has a 36 games started streak going, which may be in jeopardy for week 4.

McKenzie was carted off the field so his injury is more worrisome, but he wasn't walking with a noticeable limp in the locker room and a sprain is far better then expected. McKenzie, a guy who doesn't talk about injuries, responded this way when asked about the knee "heat stroke." Good to see he has a sense of humor. Both injuries will be further evaluated Wednesday when the teams gets back to practice.

According to Mike Garafolo Hakeem Nicks intends to begin practicing on Wednesday.

Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger checks in with a very interesting story about the details of WR Plaxico Burress' release from the Giants yesterday.

"According to someone familiar with the negotiations, the team offered Burress the chance to earn all of the money that was written into his contract from here on out. All he had to do was end his fight for the money he forfeited over the last four weeks of last season (base salary, roster bonus and signing bonus) during which he was suspended for "conduct detrimental to the team" and start playing by their rules."
According to a source close to the team, the Giants would have allowed Burress to earn the following on his remaining four year contract if he dropped his grievance stemming from his self inflicted gunshot wound in November 2008.? $11.5 million in base salary; $3.5 in reporting bonuses; $8.2 in roster bonuses; $5 million in escalators and $1.3 million in workout bonuses.? That totals out to $29.5 million.

I will be stunned if anyone gives him this kind of money in his next contract.? At minimum one would think he's headed for a Terrell Owens type 1 year deal when Burress signs with a new club.
