TE coach Mike Pope might have his best group in recent memory in camp this summer.

When it comes to teaching and developing tight ends, no one has done it longer, and better, than Giants' TE coach Michael Pope. This summer, Pope is enjoying the riches of having both veteran and rising stars in his unit.

The Giants usually carry three TEs on their roster, but this year they may expand that number. Based on TE coach Mike Pope's presser yesterday, the Giants may have plans for four players at the position: Bear Pascoe, Adrien Robinson, Brandon Myers and Larry Donnell.

Giants TE coach Mike Pope has a long resume chock full of star students. This year, he is presented with perhaps his greatest challenge. That's what we thought last year, after Kevin Boss left for free agency. We were wrong. The Giants' TEs, led by Jake Ballard, surprised the NFL with their consistency and big play ability.

When Ballard and another TE - Travis Beckum - went down with torn knee ligaments in the Super Bowl, the Giants were down to one: Bear Pascoe.

Q: With Kevin Boss gone, what are the Giants plans at TE?

A: I'm not sure this is it. Personally, I thought they were counting on Boss returning. They don't have an established, reliable presence there right now. Bear Pascoe will move back now that the Giants have a fullback (Pitt rookie Henry Hynoski) and second-year UDFA Jake Ballard has looked pretty good thus far this summer, but there's no way this was what Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin had in mind going into the season.

Q: Why wasn't Boss re-signed?

We know the Giants and OC Kevin Gilbride have had recent issues with their tight ends.

Last year, they had five of hem in camp and only one - Bear Pascoe - was healthy enough to participate in drills at one point.

Kevin Boss has shown that he can do the job, but he's been in and out of the lineup with various ills. Because his status varies from week-to-week, Boss' impact on the offense can't be determined. ?When he's healthy, he good. ?But he hasn't been healthy often enough to be factored in to the game plan prominently.

Giants TE coach Mike Pope has been a respected tutor of tight ends in this league for decades.? He is on his third generation of tight ends here with the Giants.? His prior students include Pro Bowlers Mark Bavaro and Jeremy Shockey as well as Mr. Reliable - Howard Cross.

"He is the best tight ends coach in football," Head Coach Tom Coughlin said.

His top student right now is Kevin Boss, the talented, underused successor to Shockey who has been fighting through some injury issues the past year.
