The Jets own the third pick in this year's draft, their highest since 1996. How have they drafted in the first round over the past five years?

2017: Safety Jamal Adams, No. 6

It's too early to tell how Adams' career will pan out, but the signs so far have been promising. He started every game in his rookie year as the Jets' secondary definitely played better than it had in 2016. On the field, Adams had his ups and downs, but he showed flashes of brilliance in a versatile role. Off the field, he's played a big part in the ongoing culture change that has galvanized the team and has also been a useful tool in player recruitment.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan made it clear he had no worries about the state of the Jets' defensive line heading into the offseason. Sure, they've lost a lot of talent in recent years, trading Sheldon Richardson, cutting Muhammad Wilkerson and not re-signing Damon Harrison.

But they still have Leonard Williams, the sixth pick of the 2015 draft, and despite a down season last year, the Jets have huge expectations for him.

The Jets are bringing back DL Xavier Cooper on a one-year deal for next season, per Daily News' Manish Mehta

Cooper began the 2017 season with the 49ers before becoming cut in late October. The Jets scooped him up on Halloween, and he ended up playing eight games, totaling 10 tackles and one sack in the process.

The 26-year-old filled in during Muhammad Wilkerson's suspenion, and impressed as a fill-in. He will likely be vying for a depth role on the defensive front as well this season.

Armed with $90 million-plus in salary cap space and extra draft picks, Jets GM Mike Maccagnan has been a busy man the last few days. He's reshaped his roster, reset the quarterback position, and possibly put his franchise in contention for the next few years.

The Jets have too much business to attend to in the next seven weeks to get too deep into their draft plans just yet. They have about $90 million in salary cap space to spend in free agency first.

And what they buy with that will be a key factor in what they do with the sixth overall pick in the NFL draft.

Maccagnan, Bowles on Wilkerson 00:00:58
Jets GM Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles discuss their reasoning for releasing defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson from the team.

The Jets have released Muhammad Wilkerson, the team announced Wednesday.

"Mo's was a business decision," head coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday at the NFL Combine. "It wasn't disciplinary at all."

"The most important thing is the team," Bowles added. "I'm disappointed for the team, I'm disappointed for him. Obviously it didn't work out, but I have a lot of move for Mo. I think he's still got a lot of football ahead of him, and he's got some good football ahead of him. And I just wish him the best."

Three years ago, the Jets seemed to have the makings of the best defensive line in football. They added Leonard Williams to a line that already featured Mo Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, and Damon Harrison. The potential seemed to be huge.

Now Wilkerson, Richardson, and Harrison are all gone, and Williams is coming off a disappointing, two-sack season. So, it makes sense that the Jets will spend a bunch of their $90 million or so of salary cap space in upgrading their defensive line

The Jets have seen Sheldon Richardon, Damon Harrison, and Quinton Coples depart within the past few seasons. With the departure of Muhammad Wilkerson thought to be imminent, they suddenly find themselves in a position where they lack depth on the defensive interior.

In addition, a potentially promising pipeline of young depth hasn't really materialized. Deon Simon and Claude Pelon couldn't crack the rotation, and spent most of the year on the practice squad, while Lawrence Thomas became a full back. Leonard Williams will be back, but his 2017 season was arguably just as disappointing as Wilkerson's, and he might find that teams can more readily gameplan around him if he's not surrounded with the same kind of talent...

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: The Jets started over last offseason and actually built themselves a nice core of talent. They have many young, inexpensive players they can build around this spring.

They certainly have the tools to build around them - perhaps as much as $100 million in cap room, the sixth overall pick in the draft, and some extra picks too. And that's good, because even though the Jets exceeded expectations last season, they were still 5-11, and have plenty of holes to fill.

Now, as they get ready to begin Phase 2 of their rebuilding project, here's a look at their biggest needs.

When the free agency frenzy finally begins, the Jets figure to be at the center of the storm. And all eyes will be on how hard they go after the quarterback they so desperately need.

But they have a ton of salary cap space to spend in other areas, including maybe on the 24 players they have on their roster who are approaching free agency. Here's a look at all their free agents-to-be, and their prospects of returning or finding potential riches somewhere else around the league:

The Patriots predictably disposed of the Jets effortlessly in the season finale, ultimately winning 26-6. From the Jets' perspective, the game was fairly meaningless, and they used it to get another look at some of the players whose future roles with the team are uncertain.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the defensive side of the ball:

Muhammad Wilkerson, who has been inactive for the last two games due to what Todd Bowles said is a coach's decision, will be a game-time decision for Sunday's season finale against the Patriots, Bowles said on Wednesday.

Wilkerson has been benched due to showing up to the team facility late on Dec. 14, the third straight season in which Wilkerson was benched for being late to a team meeting.

Although Wilkerson has practiced during the weeks he's been benched, Bowles reiterated last week that it was up to him whether or not Wilkerson will suit up again this season.

The Jets were competitive again, as they have been in every home game this year, but struggled to generate enough offense or any impact plays on defense in Sunday's 14-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Meanwhile, the Chargers managed to keep their playoff hopes alive in a sloppy game that saw the teams combine for 18 punts. For New York, there's the sense that the conclusion of the season next week will predominantly be a relief to players and coaches alike.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the defensive side of the ball:

Jets head coach Todd Bowles told reporters he was the one who decided to make defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson a healthy scratch for the second straight game.

"I made him inactive, coach's decision," Bowles said, according to Newsday's Calvin Watkins, after Sunday's 14-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Wilkerson was benched for last week's game against the New Orleans Saints for showing up to the team facility late the Friday before the game, the third straight season in which Wilkerson was benched for being late to a team meeting.

Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson is not expected to play for the rest of the 2017 season as he is inactive against the Chargers, and will most likely see the same next Sunday, per SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

Head coach Todd Bowles noted during the week that if Wilkerson was going to be held out, it wouldn't be due to discipline. He was benched last week against the Saints after he showed up to the Jets' facility the Friday before the matchup "very late." It is the third straight year Wilkerson has been benched due to a late arrival at a team meeting.

The veteran lineman has been at practice all week with the team, and head coach Todd Bowles said, "everything has been normal with Mo." Wilkerson reportedly spoke with his teammates earlier this week, and apologized for letting them down.

The Jets don't plan on playing Muhammad Wilkerson over the final two games of the season, according to Manish Mehta of NY Daily News.

According to the report, it's unclear whether they'll dress him and leave him on the sidelines or just deactivate him for the game.

THE GAME

The Jets (5-9) against Los Angeles Chargers (7-7) at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

If you're dreaming of a white Christmas … keep dreaming. On the day before, it'll be in the low 40s, partly cloudy and light winds.

WHAT IT MEANS

Nothing. At least not to the Jets -- although if they're still at all undecided on the future of Todd Bowles, a respectable showing down the stretch can only help. The Chargers, meanwhile, are one game back in both the wild-card and AFC West races.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Muhammad Wilkerson was on time for the second straight day on Thursday, which of course is a triumph in itself. He practiced with his team in full again. And since Jets coach Todd Bowles has said "He served his sentence" for past transgressions, all indications are he'll be playing on Sunday afternoon.

But that would be a foolish decision. It also would be a risk the Jets literally can't afford to take...

Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson returned to practice on Wednesday -- less than a week after being benched and not traveling with the team for their game against the Saints in New Orleans.

Head coach Todd Bowles has not yet decided if Wilkerson will play against the Chargers on Sunday, but told reporters that if Wilkerson is kept out, it won't be related to discipline.

Wilkerson was very late to the Jets' facility last Friday, which is why he was benched, a source told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano. Despite being heavy underdogs, the Jets gave a solid account of themselves this week, exploiting some sloppy play from the Saints to make Sunday's game competitive deep into the fourth quarter. Mo Wilkerson was back at the Jets' practice facility on Monday. And it's still possible that he was there for the last time.

Jets coach Todd Bowles refused to say whether the 28-year-old Wilkerson would be allowed to practice with the team this week or play in either of the Jets' final two games, one day after Wilkerson wasn't even allowed to be with the Jets for their game in New Orleans. As SNY reported last week, Bowles is considering suspending or deactivating the troublesome veteran for the remainder of the season...

Mo Wilkerson won't play for the Jets on Sunday afternoon, and it's possible he'll never play for the Jets again.

Jets coach Todd Bowles is considering turning Wilkerson's one-week punishment into something more, according to a team source, including possibly sitting him for the final two games of the season, too. And with Wilkerson now a virtual lock to be cut in March before his 2018 salary becomes guaranteed, that means he may have played the final game of his Jets career...

A day after he benched Muhammad Wilkerson for most of the first quarter because he showed up late to a team meeting, Jets head coach Todd Bowles said he still considers the 28-year-old defensive end a team leader.

Wilkerson sat for most of the first quarter for arriving to a team meeting late on Saturday, the third straight year he has been benched for being late to a team meeting in his career.

But Bowles said Wilkerson and linebacker Darron Lee, who was a healthy scratch from Sunday's 38-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs for showing up late to practice, have "earned a lot of trust.

"You make a mistake, and you lose a little trust, and you just have to earn it back," Bowles said at a press conference on Monday. "So going forward, we'll go from there."

The Jets have largely avoided the locker room problems that plagued the team last season, but some of them still apparently have a problem with showing up on time.

Jets linebacker Darron Lee was inactive on Sunday because he showed up late to a team practice, and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson was benched for a quarter for showing up late for a meeting, a team source confirmed. Both are automatic punishments on head coach Todd Bowles' list of team rules.

The Jets are not going to make the playoffs, even if they're not ready to accept that. Their denial is understandable, though. The math says they're still in it. They're only two games back with five to go.

But they're also trending in the wrong direction - badly - having lost five of their last six games. They are 4-7, which currently seeds them 12th in the AFC. They'd have to win out and get help from the six teams in front of them. They're not good enough or lucky enough for all that...

The Jets know they must limit Cam Newton on Sunday if they are going to beat the Panthers.

Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson is focused on thwarting Newton, who is known to celebrate as Superman, by not letting him "put the cape on his back."

"I think just not letting him, as people say, put the cape on his back and make all those plays he normally makes," said Muhammad Wilkerson, via Rich Cimini of ESPN. "Whether it is getting out of the pocket and scrambling, or just Cam being Cam, we have to make sure we keep him in the pocket and he doesn't have explosive plays."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - A week away from football did some good for the Jets, who will have a healthy cornerback Morris Claiborne on Sunday, and they might even get running back Matt Forte back, too.

Claiborne, who has been hampered by a foot injury, was a full participant in practice on Friday and wasn't even listed on the final injury report of the week. He had suffered the injury back on Oct. 29 against the Falcons and missed the next game against the Buffalo Bills on a short week. He did play in the Jets' 15-10 loss in Tampa two weeks ago, but he was clearly limited by his foot...

At Linden High School's annual Thanksgiving rivalry game against Union High School in New Jersey, former Linden star Muhammad Wilkerson had his jersey no. 91 retired, via NJ.com

Wilkerson is still a vital part of his hometown, with the Jets practice facility less than an hour away, he's a community leader. He founded T.E.A.M. 96, a nonprofit focused on mentoring college-bound high school student-athletes, as well as giving out scholarships.

"Linden Public Schools and the Linden Athletics family is truly honored to retire Muhammad Wilkerson's No. 91 jersey," said Linden Athletic Director Steven Viana, via a Linden Public School System press release. "Muhammad's accomplishments on the field are well-documented, but his contributions to our community and our students are most gratifying. He is a mainstay at our events, an avid supporter of anything and everything Linden."

Union spoiled Wilkerson's day by beating Linden 21-18.

After the win against Buffalo, there was a lot of hype about the "resurgent" Jets and some talk of Todd Bowles as a coach of the year candidate. However, after yesterday's dispiriting loss, the reality is that the Jets have lost four of five with their only win coming over a Bills team whose 37-point loss to the Saints yesterday suggests they have been overrated. Heading to the bye, it's probably time to reset our expectations.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the defensive side of the ball...
