The Patriots predictably disposed of the Jets effortlessly in the season finale, ultimately winning 26-6. From the Jets' perspective, the game was fairly meaningless, and they used it to get another look at some of the players whose future roles with the team are uncertain.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the defensive side of the ball:

Muhammad Wilkerson, who has been inactive for the last two games due to what Todd Bowles said is a coach's decision, will be a game-time decision for Sunday's season finale against the Patriots, Bowles said on Wednesday.

Wilkerson has been benched due to showing up to the team facility late on Dec. 14, the third straight season in which Wilkerson was benched for being late to a team meeting.

Although Wilkerson has practiced during the weeks he's been benched, Bowles reiterated last week that it was up to him whether or not Wilkerson will suit up again this season.

The Jets were competitive again, as they have been in every home game this year, but struggled to generate enough offense or any impact plays on defense in Sunday's 14-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Meanwhile, the Chargers managed to keep their playoff hopes alive in a sloppy game that saw the teams combine for 18 punts. For New York, there's the sense that the conclusion of the season next week will predominantly be a relief to players and coaches alike.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the defensive side of the ball:

Jets head coach Todd Bowles told reporters he was the one who decided to make defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson a healthy scratch for the second straight game.

"I made him inactive, coach's decision," Bowles said, according to Newsday's Calvin Watkins, after Sunday's 14-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Wilkerson was benched for last week's game against the New Orleans Saints for showing up to the team facility late the Friday before the game, the third straight season in which Wilkerson was benched for being late to a team meeting.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Jets spent the offseason purging their roster of aging or overpriced veterans, many of whom were at the epicenter of a badly fractured locker room.

Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson is not expected to play for the rest of the 2017 season as he is inactive against the Chargers, and will most likely see the same next Sunday, per SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

Head coach Todd Bowles noted during the week that if Wilkerson was going to be held out, it wouldn't be due to discipline. He was benched last week against the Saints after he showed up to the Jets' facility the Friday before the matchup "very late." It is the third straight year Wilkerson has been benched due to a late arrival at a team meeting.

The veteran lineman has been at practice all week with the team, and head coach Todd Bowles said, "everything has been normal with Mo." Wilkerson reportedly spoke with his teammates earlier this week, and apologized for letting them down.

The Jets don't plan on playing Muhammad Wilkerson over the final two games of the season, according to Manish Mehta of NY Daily News.

According to the report, it's unclear whether they'll dress him and leave him on the sidelines or just deactivate him for the game.

Additionally, Mehta reports that some within the Jets organization don't even want Wilkerson at the practice facility for the rest of the season. He didn't practice much this week anyway, but some don't want him there at all.

The Jets host the Chargers on Sunday at 1 p.m.

THE GAME

The Jets (5-9) against Los Angeles Chargers (7-7) at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

If you're dreaming of a white Christmas … keep dreaming. On the day before, it'll be in the low 40s, partly cloudy and light winds.

WHAT IT MEANS

Nothing. At least not to the Jets -- although if they're still at all undecided on the future of Todd Bowles, a respectable showing down the stretch can only help. The Chargers, meanwhile, are one game back in both the wild-card and AFC West races.

The Jets ruled right guard Brian Winters out for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers and did not disclose whether defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson would play.

Winters has been dealing with an abdominal injury and did not practice on Thursday. Either Dakota Dozier or Brent Qvale will start in place of Winters, who has started in 13 games this season.

Wilkerson, who was benched for last week's game against the New Orleans Saints for showing up late to practice, returned to practice for the third straight day, however head coach Todd Bowles did not say whether or not Wilkerson would play.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Muhammad Wilkerson was on time for the second straight day on Thursday, which of course is a triumph in itself. He practiced with his team in full again. And since Jets coach Todd Bowles has said "He served his sentence" for past transgressions, all indications are he'll be playing on Sunday afternoon.

But that would be a foolish decision. It also would be a risk the Jets literally can't afford to take...

Jeane Coakley reports from Jets practice where head coach Todd Bowles discusses Muhammad Wilkerson and his status for Sunday's game.

Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson returned to practice on Wednesday -- less than a week after being benched and not traveling with the team for their game against the Saints in New Orleans.

Head coach Todd Bowles has not yet decided if Wilkerson will play against the Chargers on Sunday, but told reporters that if Wilkerson is kept out, it won't be related to discipline.

Wilkerson was very late to the Jets' facility last Friday, which is why he was benched, a source told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano. Wilkerson spoke with his teammates earlier this week and told them he let them down. However, when asked if he had earned his contract from the Jets, he said he had earned "every penny."

Despite being heavy underdogs, the Jets gave a solid account of themselves this week, exploiting some sloppy play from the Saints to make Sunday's game competitive deep into the fourth quarter. In the end, the Saints' offensive playmaking abilities were too much for the Jets to keep up with, but at least they quieted those critics who had been saying they'd get blown out again.

Let's review the defensive performance from Sunday's loss:

Mo Wilkerson was back at the Jets' practice facility on Monday. And it's still possible that he was there for the last time.

Jets coach Todd Bowles refused to say whether the 28-year-old Wilkerson would be allowed to practice with the team this week or play in either of the Jets' final two games, one day after Wilkerson wasn't even allowed to be with the Jets for their game in New Orleans. As SNY reported last week, Bowles is considering suspending or deactivating the troublesome veteran for the remainder of the season...

Mo Wilkerson won't play for the Jets on Sunday afternoon, and it's possible he'll never play for the Jets again.

Jets coach Todd Bowles is considering turning Wilkerson's one-week punishment into something more, according to a team source, including possibly sitting him for the final two games of the season, too. And with Wilkerson now a virtual lock to be cut in March before his 2018 salary becomes guaranteed, that means he may have played the final game of his Jets career...

Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson is out for Sunday's game against the game after he was benched for showing up late to the team facility Friday.

Wilkerson will not travel with the team to New Orleans as it was a 'coaching decision,' according to head coach Todd Bowles. Wilkerson supposedly showed up to the facility "very late," a source told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano. This is the third straight year the 28-year-old has been benched for being late.

This season, Wilkerson has been underperforming with only 3.5 sacks and 46 combined tackles.

Wilkerson will not play Sunday 00:03:02
The Daily News Live crew discusses Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson not traveling to play in New Orleans this Sunday due to tardiness.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Muhammad Wilkerson has no future with the Jets. He knows it and they know it. He'll be released long before his 2018 salary is guaranteed on March 16.

And really, there's no reason to wait that long anymore.

Wilkerson was punished by Jets coach Todd Bowles on Friday, after he showed up late -- very late -- to the team facility, according to a team source. Bowles immediately told the 28-year-old malcontent he wouldn't be traveling to New Orleans with the team for the game on Sunday. And according to one team source, his pseudo-suspension could last longer than that.

A day after he benched Muhammad Wilkerson for most of the first quarter because he showed up late to a team meeting, Jets head coach Todd Bowles said he still considers the 28-year-old defensive end a team leader.

Wilkerson sat for most of the first quarter for arriving to a team meeting late on Saturday, the third straight year he has been benched for being late to a team meeting in his career.

But Bowles said Wilkerson and linebacker Darron Lee, who was a healthy scratch from Sunday's 38-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs for showing up late to practice, have "earned a lot of trust.

"You make a mistake, and you lose a little trust, and you just have to earn it back," Bowles said at a press conference on Monday. "So going forward, we'll go from there."

The Jets have largely avoided the locker room problems that plagued the team last season, but some of them still apparently have a problem with showing up on time.

Jets linebacker Darron Lee was inactive on Sunday because he showed up late to a team practice, and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson was benched for a quarter for showing up late for a meeting, a team source confirmed. Both are automatic punishments on head coach Todd Bowles' list of team rules.

The Jets are not going to make the playoffs, even if they're not ready to accept that. Their denial is understandable, though. The math says they're still in it. They're only two games back with five to go.

But they're also trending in the wrong direction - badly - having lost five of their last six games. They are 4-7, which currently seeds them 12th in the AFC. They'd have to win out and get help from the six teams in front of them. They're not good enough or lucky enough for all that...

The Jets know they must limit Cam Newton on Sunday if they are going to beat the Panthers.

Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson is focused on thwarting Newton, who is known to celebrate as Superman, by not letting him "put the cape on his back."

Wilkerson is still a vital part of his hometown, with the Jets practice facility less than an hour away, he's a community leader. He founded T.E.A.M. 96, a nonprofit focused on mentoring college-bound high school student-athletes, as well as giving out scholarships.

"Linden Public Schools and the Linden Athletics family is truly honored to retire Muhammad Wilkerson's No. 91 jersey," said Linden Athletic Director Steven Viana, via a Linden Public School System press release. He is a mainstay at our events, an avid supporter of anything and everything Linden."

Union spoiled Wilkerson's day by beating Linden 21-18.

After the win against Buffalo, there was a lot of hype about the "resurgent" Jets and some talk of Todd Bowles as a coach of the year candidate. However, after yesterday's dispiriting loss, the reality is that the Jets have lost four of five with their only win coming over a Bills team whose 37-point loss to the Saints yesterday suggests they have been overrated. Heading to the bye, it's probably time to reset our expectations.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the defensive side of the ball...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- On the Jets' first defensive play, linebacker Jordan Jenkins broke through the line of scrimmage and dragged Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor down at the 4-yard line. For a team that has had an underachieving pass rush for the first half of the season, that was a significant moment.

It also sent a significant message.

"It said, 'We're coming,'" Jenkins said.

They certainly were. And they never stopped.

In a word? Ick. It will rain and it will rain hard (you know, assuming the forecasts are correct) and the wind will be 15-25 mph with stronger gusts. The temperatures will be in the mid-60s, which seems comfortable if you overlook the windy and wet part.
