After the win against Buffalo, there was a lot of hype about the "resurgent" Jets and some talk of Todd Bowles as a coach of the year candidate. However, after yesterday's dispiriting loss, the reality is that the Jets have lost four of five with their only win coming over a Bills team whose 37-point loss to the Saints yesterday suggests they have been overrated. Heading to the bye, it's probably time to reset our expectations.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the defensive side of the ball...

The Jets put together their most complete performance of the season in an impressive 34-21 win over the Bills on Thursday night, rushing for almost 200 yards and racking up seven sacks and three fumble recoveries in the process.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- On the Jets' first defensive play, linebacker Jordan Jenkins broke through the line of scrimmage and dragged Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor down at the 4-yard line. For a team that has had an underachieving pass rush for the first half of the season, that was a significant moment.

It also sent a significant message.

"It said, 'We're coming,'" Jenkins said.

They certainly were. And they never stopped.

The Jets' defense hopes to regroup for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons after New York lost back-to-back games against divisional opponents.

New York blew a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter by giving up 17 unanswered points in Sunday's 31-28 loss to the Miami Dolphins to fall to 3-4, but the defense is confident it can go back to the team that had allowed 13.3 points per game during its three-game winning streak.

"We win together. We lose together," defensive end Leonard Williams said, according to NJ.com's Connor Hughes. "The No. 1 thing we have to do is stick together and be a family. That's the one thing I can say: This team is a family."

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: The Jets once again gave a good account of themselves in this game, but they had too many defensive penalties and the offense dried up in the fourth quarter, enabling Miami's come-from-behind win. Despite knocking Jay Cutler out of the game, the Jets were unable to protect a 28-14 lead, the first time since 1999 they've had a two score lead in the fourth quarter and not won. Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the defensive side of the ball:

Defensive Line

Once again, the defensive line didn't generate any sacks, but this was an extremely encouraging performance. Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson combined for five quarterback hits, and each stuffed a couple of runs as the Jets held Miami to just 53 yards on 25 carries. Williams almost picked up his first sack on a blitz from middle linebacker that led to Jamal Adams recording the sack cleaning up, while Wilkerson intercepted a tipped pass to set up a touchdown. Moreover, they both looked more powerful and explosive than they have in recent weeks. Hopefully this is a sign that they are getting closer to 100 percent...

The New York Jets refused to go down quietly. After their fourth-quarter meltdown Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, there was some angry shouting in the locker room behind closed doors.

Quarterback Josh McCown said defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson was rallying his teammates. But it was Dolphins' rally that will be remembered after their 31-28 comeback victory Sunday.

The Jets blew a 28-14 lead in the final 12 minutes. Hence Wilkerson's postgame "pep talk."

The Jets' rushing defense ranks toward the bottom of the league, and defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers is not pleased about it.

New York has started the season at 2-2 but yielded 143.8 yards per game on the ground over the first four weeks of the season. In last week's overtime win over Jacksonville, the Jets gave up 140 yards passing but 175 yards on the ground. This came a week after the defense held Miami to just 30 yards rushing.

"That's not up to our standards being ranked 29th in the league," Muhammad Wilkerson said Wednesday, according to Newsday. "We got challecned this week by coach Rodgers coming up to the D-line telling us where we're ranked and we got to handle that [and] execute our jobs as far as stopping the run."

Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson had tests on his injured shoulder that revealed no structural damage, but Wilkerson may need to deal with the injury all season, head coach Todd Bowles said.

Wilkerson, who played during the Week 3 win over the Dolphins, did not practice on Wednesday and said afterwards that he has a Grade 1 AC joint sprain and will try to play through it.

TE Jordan Leggett (knee), RT Brandon Shell (shoulder), RB Matt Forte (toe), and LB Josh Martin (ankle) also missed practice.
