Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (bruised shoulder) did not participate in Wednesday's practice, but he believes he'll be ready to play against the Dolphins on Sunday.

Wilkerson suffered the injury during last week's matchup in Oakland, but does not think the bruise is too serious. Head coach Todd Bowles also said he doesn't believe the injury will keep Wilkerson out of action.

Below is the rest of the Jets' injury report from Wednesday's practice:

The Jets defense may have allowed 45 points to the Raiders this past Sunday, but they are not embarrassed as they believe the unit as taken positive steps forward.

The Raiders racked up 410 total yards as they had both the run and pass game working in their home opener. Though it was a bad performance, LB Darron Lee spoke about why there were no heads hung in the locker room following the game.

The Jets defense wasn't at its best last week in Buffalo, particularly against the run game, so the group plans to turn things around against the Raiders in Week 2.

"We men, I feel like as a man you definitely want to accept that challenge," Muhammad Wilkerson told reporters Wednesday. "But we know what we have to do this week and accept the challenge from Coach [Todd Bowles]."

The Jets' season got to an inauspicious start with a 21-12 loss on the road in Buffalo. Questionable coaching decisions, poor communication in the defensive backfield, an overly conservative offensive gameplan, and inconsistent tackling all contributed to the loss. However, the Jets still kept the game competitive into the fourth quarter.

Let's break down the performances on the defensive side of the ball:

A year after finishing with the sixth-worst record in the NFL, the Jets are expected to be among the league's worst teams in 2017. How bad are they supposed to be? Maybe not historically bad as some suggest, but they are still in a rebuild.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Two weeks ago, Todd Bowles went bold, promising in a radio interview that the Jets are "not going to be a terrible team." He promised a tough, scrappy team that will be competitive and "win more games than everybody ever expected."

Considering the way the Jets have systematically torn down their roster since last year, that was some really tough talk from an embattled head coach. It was an unexpected, though probably welcomed, show of brashness. But it begged the question:

The New York Jets' defensive linemen are adjusting to life without Sheldon Richardson after the franchise traded him to the Seattle Seahawks for wide receiver Jermaine Kearse, a 2018 second-round pick and swapped seventh-round picks.

Though Richardson was a former Pro Bowler, hesd coach Todd Bowles said the Jets' depth up front was a reason they could afford to trade the 26-year-old Richardson.

"That was our deepest position at the time," Bowles said, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "Obviously, we have three other guys that can play and we have [Mike] Pennel that can play and we have Claude [Pelon] that can play. You don't replace a guy like that, you just do different things."

Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson has become more of a vocal leader this season as he has taken it upon himself to fill that void in the locker room.

Linebacker David Harris was the voice in the Jets' locker room for years. Now that he is gone, Wilkerson is the next man in line and he is embracing the new role.

"I've been here for a long time now," Wilkerson told The Post's Brian Costello, "I always looked up to older guys who are no longer here. I stepped into the footsteps into being a leader. I wasn't vocal [before], but I've always been a leader on this team. David Harris isn't here anymore, so I took it upon myself to speak up more and get out of my comfort zone."

After a practice head coach Todd Bowles called "sloppy" on Thursday, the Jets stopped their session Friday for a team meeting called on by DE Muhammad Wilkerson

Bowles told reporters that he wasn't present for the meeting, but rather the players were the only ones involved. Linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin told NY Daily News' Manish Mehta Wilkerson wasn't happy about how the team has started off camp.

"As teammates, you see guys are slacking," Mauldin said. You see flashes of guys doing things right and then you see them lullling around...We saw it. Mo brought it up and said, 'Man, this is pitiful. We can't practice like this. That's how we lost last year, because we were practicing just to come out and practice.'"

"It was weird. And he called us up. He just told us that we got to pick it up. And that's what we did."

"Mo doesn't cut it loose all the time," the source said. "There's times when he takes a lot of plays off."

Jets DE Sheldon Richardson says head coach Todd Bowles has been more strict than in the past, per Darryl Slater of NJ.com.

Bowles has been left with a young team following the Jets' roster purge that including veterans like C Nick Mangold and LB David Harris. With his job possibly in jeopardy, he has been putting emphasis on working harder.

"It's completely different from the last couple years," Richardson said at minicamp. "A lot more strict now. We weren't loose [in the past], but it's a lot more strict now. It's even more enforced than what it has been in the past."

Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson, who struggled in 2016, said he's ready to rebound this season.

"I want to pretty much have one of my best years ever," Wilkerson said Wednesday, according to the NY Post. "I plan on being dominant."

The 27-year-old Wilkerson, who signed a five-year deal worth $86 million before last season, had 4.5 sacks, 58 tackles, and one forced fumble in 15 games. He had ammassed 12.0 sacks in 2015.

Wilkerson said the leg he broke during the final game in 2015 was strong enough to play on last season, but that it impacted his performance. And he bristled at those who suggested he was mailing it in.

Richardson acknowledged he has heard the rumors and is open to the possibility that this season, his fifth since the Jets drafted him 13th overall in 2013, could be his last with New York.

"I'd be a fool not to be open to it," he said, according to Newsday's Bob Glauber. "I just want to go out there and have a great season. I can get my trade value to go up. I can get traded during the season. Might get a first-round, second-round pick. You never know."

The big defensive lineman was pictured at the Jets facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, on Monday morning, as the team officially kicked off its voluntary workouts. The Jets were a mess last season and at times they seemed out of control -- as dysfunctional as they were bad. Through it all, though, Todd Bowles did his best to remain a steady voice and presence, publicly unmoved by the chaos that seemed to be swirling around him.

Don't think for a second that Todd Bowles hasn't noticed what's been going on up in New England this offseason. The Super Bowl champs have had one of the finest offseasons in the NFL. The rich have gotten much richer, and the gap between them and the Jets is as wide as it's ever been.

But at this point Bowles can't -- and doesn't -- see the Patriots as competition. Yes, if the Jets are ever going to be serious contenders again they'll have to dethrone the monsters of the AFC East. They just have bigger problems at the moment -- getting their own franchise turned around...

PHOENIX - The Jets weren't just bad last season, they were downright dysfunctional at times. Todd Bowles knows it. Everybody knows it. And the Jets coach expects that to change.

Just don't expect him to drop the hammer on his players, or tighten the rules on what at times appeared to be his loosely-run ship. Bowles, as a former player, understands that stuff happens. And he doesn't plan on taking control with some draconian approach.

The NFL offseason may be off to a slow start, but things are surely about to pick up with cuts and contract restructures on their way, and with the scouting combine just two weeks away.

With that in mind, here is our weekly look at some of the biggest questions facing the Jets, what's new about them, where they stand on finding an answer, and if any of the issues have changed.

1. Who is their quarterback?

They of course haven't answered this yet, but they did answer who'll be coaching the quarterbacks: new offensive coordinator John Morton and new quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates. Neither has an extensive resume at their current positions -- or really working with quarterbacks -- which is interesting if they're going to be entrusted with developing a young quarterback.

Now that the Super Bowl is over, the New York Jets can begin cleaning up the wreckage from their 5-11 season and start yet another rebuilding project. Despite being on the cusp of the playoffs a year ago, they seem farther away than ever now.

With that in mind, here are some of the biggest questions the Jets must answer this offseason. We'll check back in each week to see how they're doing, whether any of the questions have been answered, and whether any have changed:

It has been 48 years and two weeks since the Jets shook up the world and changed the NFL with their victory in Super Bowl III, and they have since taken their fans on a long, depressing and at times torturous run. It's been so painful at times that it's easy to forget the Jets went to back-to-back AFC championship games just six years ago.

Of course, since then they've brought the pain: Six straight seasons without a playoff berth, only one season with a winning record, and it was all capped off by a miserable 5-11 season that felt worse since the Jets had so much optimism after going 10-6 in 2015.

We've looked at some of the roster decisions facing the Jets as we head into the offseason over the past few weeks. Readers overwhelmingly voted to keep Eric DeckerNick Mangold and David Harris and to dump Darrelle Revis, but were torn on Brandon Marshall and Sheldon Richardson. How about some of the other decisions facing the front office and coaching staff?

Of course young players like Leonard Williams and Darron Lee or players that performed well in 2016 like James Carpenter and Bilal Powell will return in 2017, but that about those whose performance was more disappointing?
