The NFL offseason may be off to a slow start, but things are surely about to pick up with cuts and contract restructures on their way, and with the scouting combine just two weeks away.

With that in mind, here is our weekly look at some of the biggest questions facing the Jets, what's new about them, where they stand on finding an answer, and if any of the issues have changed.

1. Who is their quarterback?

They of course haven't answered this yet, but they did answer who'll be coaching the quarterbacks: new offensive coordinator John Morton and new quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates. Neither has an extensive resume at their current positions -- or really working with quarterbacks -- which is interesting if they're going to be entrusted with developing a young quarterback.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

Now that the Super Bowl is over, the New York Jets can begin cleaning up the wreckage from their 5-11 season and start yet another rebuilding project. Despite being on the cusp of the playoffs a year ago, they seem farther away than ever now.

With that in mind, here are some of the biggest questions the Jets must answer this offseason. We'll check back in each week to see how they're doing, whether any of the questions have been answered, and whether any have changed:

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

It has been 48 years and two weeks since the Jets shook up the world and changed the NFL with their victory in Super Bowl III, and they have since taken their fans on a long, depressing and at times torturous run. It's been so painful at times that it's easy to forget the Jets went to back-to-back AFC championship games just six years ago.

Of course, since then they've brought the pain: Six straight seasons without a playoff berth, only one season with a winning record, and it was all capped off by a miserable 5-11 season that felt worse since the Jets had so much optimism after going 10-6 in 2015.

We've looked at some of the roster decisions facing the Jets as we head into the offseason over the past few weeks. Readers overwhelmingly voted to keep Eric DeckerNick Mangold and David Harris and to dump Darrelle Revis, but were torn on Brandon Marshall and Sheldon Richardson. How about some of the other decisions facing the front office and coaching staff?

Of course young players like Leonard Williams and Darron Lee or players that performed well in 2016 like James Carpenter and Bilal Powell will return in 2017, but that about those whose performance was more disappointing?

FLORHAM PARK, N.J - Head coach Todd Bowles may be back for another season with the Jets, but it looks like one of his coordinators -- and possibly both of them -- might not be back with him.

The jobs of offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers are in jeopardy and will be discussed when Bowles meets with Jets management and his coaching staff this week, according to a team source.

GEICO SportsNite: Todd Bowles 00:00:35
Jets head coach Todd Bowles addressed Muhammad Wilkerson's recent comments about how the medical staff handled him.

Muhammad Wilkerson knew something was wrong with his ankle early in the season.

The New York Jets defensive end wasn't his usual playmaking self, unable to move around the field the way he has for most of his career.

"It sounds like an excuse," Wilkerson said Thursday. "It's just football. It's part of the game. It's something I learned from."

The Jets were crushed by the Colts, 41-10, on Monday night at MetLife Stadium as they fell to 3-9 on the season. Bryce Petty replaced Ryan Fitzpatrick during the game and will be the starter for the remainder of the season. Here's insight and analysis regarding the Jets' awful Monday night performance...

Quarterbacks

Ryan Fitzpatrick's performance speaks for itself. He only completed one pass beyond the first down marker, had a completion percentage below 50 percent, and punctuated his performance with an interception on the kind of forced throw he's been unable to get away with all season.

While Muhammad Wilkerson has struggled to put up strong numbers on the stat sheet this season, head coach Todd Bowles has confidence the defensive end will have a good end to the season.

"He's still getting the kinks out of it sometimes, but he's feeling a lot better now, so I expect to see a lot better Mo," Bowles told reporters following Wednesday's practice.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles spoke to the media following Wednesday's practice. Here is what we learned...

  • It's still uncertain whether or not injured center Nick Mangold will play on Monday night against the Colts.
  • With lack of creating turnovers, the team has been working hard in practice to get them. "We [are] trying everything we can to get them," Bowles said. "It's just not falling our way right now."
  • WR Devin Smith has returned to practice and has no restrictions on what he can do. So far, according to Bowles, Smith is almost caught up with the offense.

From the outside it looks like chaos because that's the way it always looks when a team with high expectations goes into nosedive. It starts with the losses. Then players get angry. Some of them fight. And as the frustrations mount, rules are broken. A picture is painted of a coach losing control.

But that's just not the way it is with the Jets, where Todd Bowles remains firmly in charge, well-respected, and not in any apparent danger of being fired. As for the noise, the chaos, and the perception of a mess …

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- For one day, at least, a sense of order was restored to the Jets' chaos. So consider that a small victory for Todd Bowles.

It took them three days to do it, but Mo Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson finally owned up to the missed meetings that led to their benching on Sunday in the first quarter of the Jets' loss in Miami. Maybe they talked under pressure, or maybe they realized they were causing a distraction.

But both of the Jets' defensive linemen insisted it wouldn't happen again.

It's Ryan Fitzpatrick or bust for the Jets, as far as Todd Bowles is concerned - even though this season has already turned out to be an enormous bust.

Never mind that, though. Bowles, in a decision that is nearly impossible to justify given the current state of the franchise, insisted on Monday that he will stick with the 33-year-old Fitzpatrick at quarterback if he's able to play on his sprained left knee. And don't try to tell Bowles that this season is over, that it's more important to see if the 25-year-old Bryce Petty can be the Jets' quarterback of the future.

So the Jets have gone streaking! Two wins in a row after a verrrrry rough fist six weeks. Fitzpatrick seemsto be playing with more urgency and purpose than he had earlier in the season.

Is that an outworking of the brutal early schedule? At this point with a weak slate of games ahead can we dare to dream, Bent? Could this team get back into the fight for the wild card?

In a very Jet-like way, their 31-28 win in Cleveland Sunday helped them and hurt them, was encouraging and discouraging. It's great that they won to keep hope alive for 2016, but it seems clear at this point that 2017 should matter more. Meanwhile, a win is a win, but after an ugly first half and barely squeaking by the winless Browns, how much can this win really mean? The answer to that is still to be determined by at least what the Jets do over the next two weeks, and maybe even beyond that. All they care about at the moment is that they still have their dream of being 5-5 at the bye, and returning for a potentially important game against the Patriots in Week 12. Is that dream realistic? And the way they played on Sunday, does it really matter? Shouldn't they be looking towards next year already instead? All good questions, which hopefully will at least be partially answered in my five takeaways from the Jets' hideous-looking win over the 0-8 Browns:
