The Giants released safeties Mykkele Thompson and Duke Ihenacho from injured reserve, reports SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

Both safeties reached injury settlements with the Giants three days after the team trimmed its roster to 53 players.

Ihenacho was placed on IR earlier this month after suffering a knee injury. He signed with the Giants in May following stints with the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins.

Thompson was drafted by the Giants in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, but dealt with injuries throughout his tenure with the team.

  • The Giants are open to playing Shepard during Friday night's preseason opener if he's ready to go.
  • Mykkele Thompson is "battling" as he continues his transition to cornerback.
  • The Giants do not intend to tackle during practice at all during the preseason.

The New York Giants needed to come out in 2016 healthy and hearty, but instead may be poised for another season besieged by key injuries. It may be too soon to tell, but at this rate, they could be headed for another year at the top of the "adjusted games lost" column.

New York led the NFL in adjusted games lost, a metric to evaluate how teams were affected by injuries, for the third straight season in 2015, according to Football Outsiders.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Rookie safety Darian Thompson will not play Sunday in the Giants' game against the Washington Redskins due to a sprained foot, and there is some concern he could miss more than that.

The Giants called Thompson "week to week" after announcing his foot sprain after he missed practice on Thursday. They said he injured his foot during the final defensive series of the Giants' 16-13 win over the Saints on Sunday when another player rolled onto his leg, though he did return a few plays later.

The big story this week will undoubtedly be the much-anticipated Josh Norman-Odell Beckham, Jr. rematch, whether it will be as nasty as last time, whether any of them will talk trash, and whether Beckham will be able to control his emotions -- something he was unable to do when they faced off last year.

So what does Ben McAdoo think about that?

Darian Thompson jammed his shoulder in the preseason and will likely miss the season opener this Sunday in Dallas. Enter Nat Berhe, who has been waiting for his moment the past three summers.

The Giants drafted Berhe out of San Diego State in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the expectation that he would become a staple in their fractured secondary. Behre was hailed as a hard worker who made up for his lack of size with guile and grit. Berhe's pre-draft measurables were 5'10", 193 pounds.

Giants third round draft pick Darian Thompson, a safety out of Boise State, has done everything and more this summer to convince the team that he is their free safety of the future. But with Thompson sidelined this week, and possibly beyond, with a shoulder ailment the Giants will be relying on the "next man up" to fill the role. Who that "next man up" is right now is unknown. It could be any number of players such as the oft-injured Nat Behre and Cooper Taylor to UDFA Andrew Adams and veteran CB Leon Hall.

On Friday, safeties coach David Merritt was asked what the plan at free safety is with Thompson out.

Rookie safety Darian Thompson suffered what a source said was a "bruised" shoulder on Saturday in Buffalo that may be bad enough to keep him out of this Saturday's game against the Jets.

The Giants revealed the injury on Monday, telling reporters that Thompson is "week to week". That was alarming considering there are only three weeks left until the opener and Thompson, a third-round pick, has emerged as a near lock to win one of the starting safety jobs.

But a source insisted it might not be that bad, though a shoulder bruise could be painful and restricting enough to keep him out at least through the weekend. It was unknown how extensive the bruise was. The Giants did not reveal any specifics of the injury and coach Ben McAdoo was not available to speak to the media on Monday.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- One of the most interesting position battles at Giants training camp is starting to look like it's over before it ever really began.

Rookie Darian Thompson has emerged as the clear leader in the battle for the starting free safety job this summer - so much so that even coach Ben McAdoo acknowledged on Monday that the 22-year-old is now the favorite to win the job. Thompson has been getting virtually all of the first-team reps next to Landon Collins in recent practices, along with plenty of second-team reps, too.

The New York Giants are following the old adage of building through the draft and filling needs via free agency. The past few seasons' rosters have been ravaged by injuries and devoid of talent after several years of miscalculations at the draft table.

GM Jerry Reese, under pressure to reverse the team's fortunes overnight, spent over $200 million this offseason to bring in top free agents to fill the holes he did not successfully fill the past few years.

But what is going unnoticed is the fact Reese has been building through the draft, and this season he expects to realize the return on his investment. The team's core is centered around draft selections made the past three springs.

Nat Berhe didn't play in a game in his second season with the New York Giants and learned a lot about life in the NFL.

It can be taken away very quickly.

The safety missed all of last season with a calf injury that turned out to be a little more than a pulled muscle. He developed a blood clot in the leg and had to have it removed.
