Nelson Figueroa

Last night, in a loss to the D-Backs, Nelson Figueroa allowed three home runs, 10 hits and six runs in just 1.2 innings pitched.

Figueroa had the following to say after the game:

“There were no soft outs, even when I made good pitches they found a way to put them in play… It was one of those days when nothing seems to go right, nothing seems to work, Plan B didn’t seem to work well and in the big leagues you don’t have a chance to get to Plan C… It was very frustrating, to work so hard to come up here and try to help this team, and to get here and only last an inning and two-thirds, you know, I’m gonna beat myself up over it tonight.  But, tomorrow I’ll be live and available and I’ll be a better pitcher for it.”

the question is, who will be removed from the roster to make room for figgy… i’m think Pat Misch, who has not pitched since July 19, despite having allowed just three runs in 13 innings pitched…

?That?s what I?ve been trying to do all year?just be the most consistent starter down here,? Figueroa said. ?I don?t think I?m trying to prove that I belong or don?t belong at Triple-A. I?m just trying to show I?m ready whenever the call comes.?

Jon Niese has been optioned back to Triple-A Buffalo and will be replaced on the roster with Nelson Figueroa, reports Adam Rubin on his blog for the Daily News.

Niese allowed five runs and seven hits in 4.2 innings today against the Braves.

According to Rubin, “It may not be a leap to suggest that Tim Redding will be activated and start Monday in Los Angeles.”

In an earlier post, Rubin does an outstanding job, as usual, giving an update on the farm system, reporting on Nick Evans, Wily Mo Pena and Angel Pagan, and prospects Jonathan Malo, Tobi Stoner and Sean Ratliff, among others.

i’m glad… like i have said, i like figgy, and think, eventually, the Mets will get it right and give this guy a permanent spot in the bullpen… that said, i bet it helped him to hear there may soon be a job open in the starting rotation…

Rubin also blogs about Mike Lamb, who will join Triple-A Buffalo, as well as John Maine’s side session, Ugly Betty, Carlos Beltran’s 1000th RBI, and why Gary Sheffield started in right field and not left field last night.

In an honest and emotional post to their family blog, here, Nelson Figueroa’s wife, Alisa, explains the ins and outs, emotionally, mentally and logistically, of the team’s decision to designate her husband for assignment, writing:

“Nelson is upset. He did what is asked of any starting pitcher in baseball - he gave them a quality start and kept them in the game… He expected more than 1 day in the big leagues this time around.”

…it did come out of no place… i mean, i think most people felt he would stick around as the team’s long man… then, bam, dfa’d in favor of Casey Fossum… i like nelson, he seems like a good guy, but he’s also a good pitcher, who i think can bring a lot to the table as a middle reliever, spot starter and long man – if given a chance… hopefully he clears and ends up back in Triple-A for the Mets, because he will almost certainly get the call again to help the 25–man roster later in the season

Speaking of Figueroa, go here to watch a video clip of an interview he did prior to his weekend start for the Mets.

The Mets designated Nelson Figueroa for assignment following today?s loss to the Brewers.

The Mets purchased the contract of Casey Fossum from Triple-A Buffalo, who will take Figueroa?s spot on the roster.

?so, let me get this straight, essentially, the Mets just traded figueroa and Darren O?Day for fossum? i mean, there really wasn?t a more efficient way to bring on a spot starter for the afternoon? seriously, any time roster management comes to in play, i panic, because, while i believe Omar Minaya does a good job with major acquisitions, i feel he fumbles the ball a lot on these little moves?

SWB Yankees 8, @ Buffalo Bisons 7

Behind two homeruns from 1B Nick Evans, the Bisons took a 6-3 lead into the seventh inning, but the bullpen of Connor Robertson, Jon Switzer and then Elmer Dessens couldn't hold off the late-charging Yanks.

Nelson Figueroa was pulled after two innings and 32 pitches.? He allowed three runs on two hits, both homers.? Figueroa is certainly an option for Mike Pelfrey's start Sunday.? Pitching on two days rest after such a short outing would be nearly equivalent to a pitcher's side session in a normal five-day program.

Today, I talk with Nelson Figueroa, not only because he pitched for the Mets in 2008, but because he also has a blog of his own, which he writes with his wife, Alisa, titled The Figueroas.

By the way, Nelson and his wife also help with the blog Rally for Recovery, which is currently running an impressive sports memorabilia auction that will benefit former Major League Baseball player Ricky Stone, who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in August 2008.

Matt Wise will likely pitch again today in a minor-league rehab start, meaning a) he will have finally pitched on back-to-back days, and b) will be one step closer to re-joining the Mets this weekend in New York.

Once Wise is promoted, a current pitcher from the team’s pitching staff will be displaced.

it does not appear the Mets will carry the extra pitcher, and play short on the bench, seeing as how they are seemingly always playing short on the bench to begin with…as such, the future’s of Joe Smith, Jorge Sosa and Nelson Figueroa all seem to be in question…for Matt Wise…matt who…exactly

While Willie Randolph thinks five runs and three home runs allowed in six innings is pitching "pretty well," as he said to reporters last night, the truth is, Oliver Perez has an ERA above eight in his last three starts.

Last night was encouraging, but even Randolph admits Perez's inconsistency. Mike Pelfrey is just as unreliable, and unlike Perez, he has yet to find success at the big-league level.

Does that make Nelson Figueroa the current No. 3 starter?

well, Nelson Figueroa retired the first 14 batters of the game, and i was getting a bit excited…for what it’s worth, i’m thinking no-hitter from the first pitch of every game…which, for all i know, is why the team has never thrown a no-no…of course, that would mean it is some one else’s fault for this first 20 years or so of the organization's history…

…nevertheless, i started dreaming of the story, with brooklyn's figueroa, the Mets fan, snapping the streak…then, rip down the line, base hit…ugh…

…so closestill, though, he’s looking good so far…

In his latest Rumblings & Grumblings column for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark writes the following about Mets RHP Nelson Figueroa, who replaced Pedro Martinez on the team’s roster:

“Don't be shocked if the Mets give Nelson Figueroa a shot to stick around. Minaya seems to have a soft spot for Figueroa, a guy whose itinerary alone makes him a great story…Just in the last year, Figueroa has been A) the winning pitcher in the Mexican League all-star game last summer, B) the MVP of the Taiwan Series last fall, C) the MVP of the Dominican Series this winter and D) the MVP of the Caribbean Series in January. We guarantee no pitcher in history has ever done all that in fewer than 12 months.

“‘He pitched his butt off in front of Omar at the Caribbean Series,’ says one scout. ‘And he pitched like that all winter long.  I know people see the name and wonder.  But you see a guy pitch like that, and you say to yourself, ‘Why isn't this guy in the big leagues?’”
