Now Commenting On:

At the 2013 NBA rookie photo shoot, Bleacher Report caught up with this year's draft class and asked them about the reason they chose their uniform numbers.

While explaining how he ended up with number 1, Nets rookie Mason Plumlee possibly revealed some insight into Brooklyn's plans to honor their new head coach:

"I wanted 5. Five is what I wore in college," Plumlee said. "I don’t want to spoil it, but I think [the Nets] are going to retire it [for Jason Kidd]. Twenty one was what I was going to wear next and then they were said KG might want 21 (he settled on number 2). Then 00 was taken, so I went with the next number: number 1. ”

The Nets have retired only six numbers in their history: 3 (Drazen Petrovic), 4 (Wendell Ladner), 23 (John Williamson), 25 (Bill Melchionni), 32 (Julius Erving), and 52 (Buck Williams).

Is there anyone not on board with this? I certainly am. Kidd is my favorite player of all time. He took the franchise to its only two NBA Finals, and had a hand in all four of the club's Atlantic division titles. The minute he was acquired from Phoenix, he gave this organization relevance and, somewhat incredibly, made it the model metro-area basketball franchise for close to a decade. Who will ever forget the 32 stitches he received during the 2002 Eastern Conference semis against the Hornets? To me, he's the man that links the Nets' roller coaster-like past with a bright, promising future. It would be sweet to see it all come together and have number 5 hoisted to the rafters.

Once the Kidd/Nets reunion became official this summer, it made a ton of sense, and some fans I've spoken began clamoring for it. It looks like we may get our wish. Now that Kidd's legal problems have been settled and the schedule has been released, it wouldn't shock me to see this announced soon. And no matter when it is, you can count me as someone who will definitely be in the building to see it. Who says nothing good ever came out of a rookie photo shoot fluff piece?
