When Team USA convened in Las Vegas in early July, Williams did not work out with the team right away because as a free agent, his contract situation had yet to be settled. Williams signed his five-year, $98.7 million contract on July 11 and eventually played his way into shape.

"I certainly never said he was unfit to play USA Basketball."In London, Williams appeared in all eight games and averaged 9.0 points per game as the United States won gold for the sixth consecutive time.
"Yeah, he called me," Williams said. "I just know that when I signed back in New York that the scrutiny comes with it. It’s part of it. You guys gotta have your headlines and sell papers. That’s what your job is."
