The Nets (1-1) defeated the Miami Heat (1-2) tonight by a score of 101-100.

The Least You Should Know

[sny-box] The Nets led for most of the night and held off a furious Miami rally to hold on for the victory in front of a packed house of 17,000+ at the Barclays Center.

Paul Pierce was terrific, with 19 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds in a team-high 31 minutes of play. He was also a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, including a couple of clutch makes in the final seconds that gave the Nets a 99-95 lead that appeared to ice the game.

Joe Johnson also had 19 points, including the game-clinching free throws after LeBron James hit a 3-pointer immediately after Pierce's free throws. Johnson made two huge 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, his only 3-point attempts of the game, and was a team-best +6 on the night.

Brook Lopez got in foul trouble but managed 6 rebounds, all in the first half, and 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 20 minutes of play. Andray Blatche added 9 points in 25 minutes off the bench, and another 6 rebounds of his own.

Nine Nets players scored at least 6 points, with nobody scoring more than 19. They moved the ball extremely well and played like a true team, showing toughness, resolve and a will to win against a Heat team that never went away, but ultimately came up short.

[/sny-box]

What a game. It took nearly three hours of real time, and it was electric from start to finish. The crowd was loud and the Nets responded with a glimpse of what they're capable of. The Nets were terrific in the first and third quarters, combining to outscore the Heat 58 to 38 in those periods.

Through three quarters, the Nets held LeBron James to just 5-of-12 shooting for 13 points, with 4 turnovers and a -13 plus/minus. James ultimately finished with a game-high 26 points, but it just wasn't enough for Miami as they dropped their second straight game to fall under .500 on the year.

The bench was outstanding, especially Alan Anderson, who has probably earned himself a permanent spot in the rotation with his performance tonight in 26 minutes of action. The box score won't tell much of the story, but he hustled to grab 4 rebounds on the night and had a huge block on Dwyane Wade in the fourth quarter.

In his second and final game as acting head coach, Joe Prunty did an great job with the rotation, especially with Lopez getting in early foul trouble. Eight different Nets played over 20 minutes, with Jason Terry barely missing that mark as well. Every Nets player who got on the court scored, and only Terry and Anderson posted a negative plus/minus.

Deron Williams played 27 minutes, and looked like himself for the most part. He shot just 3-of-7 from the field, but more importantly, it looks like he'll be able to put those ankle issues to bed and be ready for a normal workload going forward.

Bottom line, it was a night to remember for Nets fans. It felt like the first big step forward for a franchise patiently waiting to make the leap towards championship contention. Tonight, they demonstrated their potential. Now, the focus turns to keeping up this momentum and proving that they're for real.

The Nets will be back in action Sunday night, when they face the Orlando Magic at the Amway Center. Tip is set for 6:00 PM.

Of course, the Raptors are not concerned with the dysfunction of the New York Knicks or the multitude problems plaguing the Brooklyn Nets.

Their focus is getting a win and Toronto will get another chance to beat the Nets on Tuesday night when the teams meet in Brooklyn, N.Y.

  • Brooklyn has just one road win this season (1-13) and has dropped its last 10 games away from home. The Nets have allowed 104 or more points in each of their 14 road games this season; this is the longest such streak from the start of any season in Nets' franchise history.

The Nets, meanwhile, have the unenviable task of facing the two teams that played for the championship last season on consecutive nights. The Nets led the Warriors by 16 at the half Thursday, but the Warriors scored 17 of the first 19 points in the third quarter and ultimately won by 16.

The Nets have lost four straight to tumble into a tie with the Philadelphia 76ers for the worst record in the NBA.

"Somehow we have to figure out when teams do turn up their juice ... that we're ready to handle it," Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said. "Especially when you have a lead against a really good team, you know they're coming after you. We just have to figure that one out."

The Cavs and Nets are both ranked in the top 10 in scoring, but Brooklyn is last in the league in points allowed, surrendering more than 114 a night. That's not a good match for an explosive offense like Cleveland's, which is fourth in scoring.

NEW YORK -- Kevin Durant had 26 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and the Golden State Warriors turned an ugly start into an easy finish in a 117-101 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night.

Klay Thompson added 23 points for the Warriors, who opened a three-game road trip that leads into their NBA Finals rematch in Cleveland on Christmas. They didn't look ready while falling behind by 16 at halftime, but were back to their sometimes unstoppable selves while outscoring the Nets by 32 points over the final 24 minutes.

Stephen Curry and Zaza Pachulia each finished with 15 points for the Warriors, who played without Draymond Green, who returned to the Bay Area early Thursday after the birth of his son, Draymond Jamal Green Jr.

The Nets (7-20) take on the NBA's best Golden State Warriors (25-4) in Brooklyn on Thursday.

According to STATS:

  • Golden State swept a pair of games from the Nets last season, improving to 12-5 in the series since January 2008. The all-time series is split at 21 wins apiece when the Nets have hosted the Warriors.
  • The Warriors have now made at least one three-pointer in each of their last 1000 games, dating back to April 11, 2004. The only team with a longer active streak is Phoenix, at 1005 consecutive games.
  • The Nets lost all three games on their road trip that concluded on Tuesday, falling to 1-13 away from home this season. However, Brooklyn has won its last two home games and could move to .500 at Barclays Center (6-7) for the season overall with a victory on Thursday.
  • Draymond Green contributed 15 points, 11 rebounds and five steals on Tuesday, which was his fourth game with at least 15, 10 and five, respectively, since 2015-16. No other player in the league has produced more than two such games over the past two seasons (Giannis Antetokounmpo and DeMarcus Cousins).
  • Rondae Hollis-Jefferson led the Nets with 19 points off the bench on Tuesday. He's now shooting .460 from the field as a reserve, which is 131 points higher than his rate as a starter (.329).
  • Justin Hamilton returned to action after missing five games by immediately leading the Nets with 11 rebounds on Tuesday. While those 11 rebounds represented a career high, his four assists were a season best.

TORONTO -- After a poor defensive effort in losing to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, the Toronto Raptors tightened up to defeat the Orlando Magic 109-79 on Sunday.

The Brooklyn Nets, on the other hand, continue to lose on the road as they dropped a 108-107 game to the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday after losing in Orlando on Friday.

The Nets (7-19) make their next stop in Toronto to play the Raptors at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday night.

Nets C Brook Lopez did not practice on Monday and will not play against the Raptors on Tuesday so that he can play in the back-to-back with Golden State and Cleveland on Thursday and Friday, according to Brian Lewis of the New York Post.

Head coach Kenny Atkinson has already sat Lopez twice during back-to-backs for Brooklyn this season, a plan in which the two say they are on the same page about.

Lopez played 30-plus minutes and scored 20-plus points in each of the last four games, with Brooklyn going 1-3 in that stretch. The three losses were by a combined 12 points.

The 28-year old center is averaging 20.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in 28.8 minutes per game this season.

Joel Embiid scored 17 of his career-high 33 points in the third quarter and hit a pair of free throws with 12.5 seconds left to lead the Philadelphia 76ers over the Brooklyn Nets 108-107 on Sunday night in a matchup of two of the league's worst teams.

Embiid added 10 rebounds and Ersan Ilyasova had 22 points for the 76ers, who snapped an eight-game home losing streak while winning for the third time in 13 games.

A leading Rookie of the Year candidate, Embiid was 12 for 17 from the field, including 2 for 3 from beyond the arc, and 7 for 8 from the free-throw line.

The Philadelphia 76ers have too many young, highly drafted big men, and not enough minutes to go around.

That has led one of them, Nerlens Noel, to speak out, and put the 76ers in a quandary as they head into Sunday's game against the Brooklyn Nets in Philadelphia.

The Sixers' other promising bigs, Joel Embiid and Jahlil Okafor, started Friday night against the Los Angeles Lakers and played 28 and 23 minutes, respectively.

Although Lin is available and expected to play, guard Isaiah Whitehead will get the start.
