The Nets and Warriors will be playing in an empty arena Thursday night during the first game in any professional sport in the United States to not allow fans to watch due to the coronavirus.
The news was first reported by The New York Times' Marc Stein on Wednesday, the same day San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced all large gatherings are banned to try to curb the outbreak.
San Francisco health officials will be issuing an order that says no gathering with more than 1,000 people will be allowed, and that ordnance will be upheld for at least two weeks to see what happens with the virus that has found its way to at least 40 states.
The San Francisco Giants are also trying to figure out their own situation, as Opening Day is two weeks away. They announced that their exhibition game against the A's on March 24 at Oracle Park has now been cancelled. Being on the road to start the season, they have time to figure out what to do with their home games.
Locker room access for media and non-essential personnel has already been prohibited by every major sports league. This surely will be a domino effect that could see more NBA games played without fans involved.
