"NEW YORK -- As the Nets enter their first season in Brooklyn, plenty of New Yorkers are wondering if the Big Apple ever will be a Nets town.
Future Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal doesn't think so.
'No, probably not,' O'Neal told ESPNNewYork.com."

According to NBA Hall of Famer and current TNT NBA Analyst, Shaquille O'Neal, New York City won't ever be a Nets town. What will be interesting to see is how the Knicks and Nets begin the 2012-2013 NBA Season. The truth is, the Knicks have been the only major sports franchise in New York City that hasn't had to split its market with another team. The Yankees and Mets (MLB), Jets and Giants (NFL), and Rangers, Devils, and Islanders (NHL) have all been competing for fans for quite some time. The Knicks, on the other hand, haven't had any real competition.
Obviously, supplanting the Knicks will take years of sustained success on the part of the Nets, but to say it'll never happen is probably a bit pessimistic.
What do you think? Can the Nets ever take control of New York City?
